croc question

DragonsLair Jun 04, 2007 11:55 PM

I have an opportunity to aquire another small croc monitor (9 inches snout to vent). A while back someone wrote about a croc, it was either Jobi or mike i dont remember, but they referred to it as a Maurke (not sure on the spelling) they said this type of croc had a calmer disposition than the others and had more of a speckled pattern as opposed to the large yellow spots. If possible could another picture of this croc be posted. the young croc i'm thinking about getting has a speckled pattern and is extremely docile, even when i reached slowly into his enclosure he climbed on to my hand and was quite relaxed. Any help will be appreciated.
Chris

That animal is not from Merauke!
I said they have better temperament yes, but I was referring to them as adults, babies of all crocs can be nice or nippy depending on individual or how you treat them.

There seem to be a similar temperament difference in many species, albigularis from south are said to be quit feisty while northern are pretty easy, same for the gouldi complex, indicus, jobiensis, Doreanus, salvator, beccari vs prasinus, dumerili vs heterophilys, niloticus, in almost every species theirs a calmer morph, I don’t know why, but obviously they make better captives.
As Richard said in a lower post, les stressed monitors do much better.

The female with the sever gum problem I posted, she was a crazy female highly stressed, always hissing and puffing, tail whipping at any shadows, she had serious liver damage and obviously was suffering, no matter what treatment some things you only see at autopsy.

The image i posted is of the young croc i purchased back in march, not of the one i was writing about. After reading your post i looked at the monitor i was thinking of purchasing and could tell from JPs discription that it was not from merauke, anyway just wanted to clarify. Thanks Chris

Merauke have a speckled pattern on the body and tail, they also have a yellow head/snout.

Please keep in mind that it is the calm one that will probly bite you in time. You'll no doubt get complacent and make a mistake with not giving the respect it deserves.
