Feeding young crested

antr1 Jun 05, 2007 09:32 AM

My girlfriend picked up a young crested, about 3 inches snout to vent. We've given him fruit baby food and homemade blended fruits with calcium and cricket dust blended in, as well as now trying the Crested Gecko Meal Replacement Diet. He/She doesn't seem interested in any of them.

He goes nuts when we throw dusted crickets in, you would think he's never eaten before. Is there a way to get him to eat both? I read it's not healthy for them to eat only one not the other.

Well, my crested ate crickets almost exclusively for her first 3-4 months and it didn't seem to do her any harm. That being said, if you want to move away from that, a good way to switch them over to Crested Gecko Diet is to dust the crickets in it. That way they get used to the smell/taste as something that is food.

try leaving a small bottle cap of CGD in there at all times, and do a few crickets once a week. chances are your gecko has been eating at night while you're not watching and you don't even notice, since they eat a small amount. if you put a very shallow layer in a cap, you should notice the lick marks. if the gecko is hungry, it will eat what is available, so avoid the baby food, it won't starve itself.

I do just that. Every evening I put the CGD in the tank, I brought a red led light to see him/her at night and pay close attention to the amount of food in the cap, and dont see any tell tale signs.

But throw dusted crickets in and he goes wild. He has missed the crickets and gtten a mouthfull of paper towel and just sat there jerking his head side to side like a rabid pitbull...lol
