A dog chewed box turtle

PHRatz Jun 05, 2007 10:49 AM

I don't have this one.. yet..I may be getting it but I'm not sure. If I do I'll take pictures!

My summer classes began yesterday, my pet sitter is also my teaching partner. She said that this past Sat. morning she & her daughter went to feed dogs at one of her pet sitting jobs. Her daughter came running to her with a torn up small box turtle about Wallinda's size & said "look Mom this was in the pen with the dogs."
So "mom" called my vet, got the turtle into the vet's right away & then yesterday the word was "the turtle is holding it's own for now."
What does that mean? We're not sure but she asked me if I could do the nursing care when the turtle gets out of the hospital so of course I said yes.
Will it come out of the hospital? Not sure yet but I just can't say no to these poor torn up shelled kids....
We'll see what happens.

Your turtle family sounds like my dog family: we have four 'reject' dogs that were dumped or strays or abused and have issues with humans (other than us), one is blind in one eye...they have their own tight little pack here, though, and are excellent watchdogs/alarm systems/doorbells.
We love 'em all.

Your dog family is like my partner/sitter's family.
All of their dogs are strays. They moved out into the country so they'd have more room & less neighbor complaints that way they can go over the city ordinance dog limit of 5. I think they have 8 strays now.
They have cats, dogs, & birds that were all found but they aren't equipped to handle nursing care for a turtle.. that's not something they do. She has 18 years experience working for vets but those were all dog-cat-bird years, not reptile.
Anyway....
The vet called her yesterday afternoon to say that the turtle is doing well has been completely repaired is on medication, but is ready to go home today. It sounds like this is not as bad as Chip because the vet thinks this one will be fully healed in 1 year not 2 or 3.
We'll see what happens. I'll be at the vet's today to borrow lizards for class so we'll see how this turtle looks this afternoon.

Great! Glad to hear yours is doing well.
I have 2 others that have been dog chewed & none of them were chewed by my dog either.
I got this one yesterday afternoon but haven't had the time to take pics just yet. It was surprisingly smaller than I thought it was going to be.
I can't tell for sure if it's male or female because it's so small but I let one male (Hobo) look at it & he sniffed the turtle.
Hobo is a very aggressive male when he sees another male he immediately takes on a fight stance, he didn't do that with this turtle so based on his reaction I think it's female.
I only let him look for about 20 seconds then took it away so I dunno for sure.
I am really surprised by how well this one is doing because the person who found it said it was in a pen with 2 German short-haired pointers and the front of the carapace was crushed so that the turtle could not extend it's head. She said it was bloody, with "meat hanging out" so she thought it was dead. She touched a foot & the foot moved so she got it to the vet. It spent 5 days in the hospital & has a lot of acrylic patch work on it.
Yesterday this turtle ate for me already so because of that I think it's got a good shot at making it.
I'll get some pics ASAP & post them.
