A few more questions from a new herper...

nechushtan Aug 16, 2003 02:18 PM

Thanks for the previous answers folks... Now for a couple more:
1) What types of soaps (if any) can be used to wash off a baby bull snake (she seems to not mind laying in her excrement).
2) What are the specific limitations for housing snakes together. (eg. could we house a bull and a pine together safely?, Should they be roughly the same age and size?, If we do opposite sex bulls without the hibernation might they still breed spontaneously? A bull and a ratsnake together?)
3) With fall and winter coming soon should we hibernate a baby bull or cut back feeding or anything specific for the wintertime? If so what is the procedure?
4) I've got a "snow" bull and I've seen about a half dozen common "morphs" available but has anyone done a "black" bullsnake?

Thanks again in advance...

>>1) What types of soaps (if any) can be used to wash off a baby bull snake (she seems to not mind laying in her excrement).

No soap. Just maybe a larger cage, etter substrate, more hide box than one, etc. Wash off with a warm (not hot not cot) towel with JUST water.

>>2) What are the specific limitations for housing snakes together. (eg. could we house a bull and a pine together safely?, Should they be roughly the same age and size?, If we do opposite sex bulls without the hibernation might they still breed spontaneously? A bull and a ratsnake together?)

I NEVER suggest housing snakes together. Snakes eat snake, even ones that don't due it commonly. Bullsnakes will eat other snakes, including rattlesnakes, in the wild. I've seen pictures. One snake per cage to avoid that, better be able to monitor health (if one pukes, which was it and iof one gets sick, they both probably get sick), easier to feed, less stress, no chance of accident breedings (which can be dangerous and stupid), etc.

>>3) With fall and winter coming soon should we hibernate a baby bull or cut back feeding or anything specific for the wintertime? If so what is the procedure?

That depends. Can you keep the temperature stable at the proper level? If so, procede as you have always done with no reduction in food and no brumation. It is safest to NOT brumate if you can keep the temps proper and stable (and warm).

>>4) I've got a "snow" bull and I've seen about a half dozen common "morphs" available but has anyone done a "black" bullsnake?

That depends on what you mean. if you mean a bull with no yellow, then they have axanthics. If you mean a solid black bull as in a melanistic bullsnake? Nah, that mutation hasn't been found in bullsnakes (yet?). However, there are some darker than average popluations that have been selectively bred, but they tend to be less popular.

Good luck and continue to enjoy your baby!
