My new hatchling I'm confused?

anson May 21, 2003 05:54 PM

I just hatched out my first baby leopard gecko and I have read so much info that I am confused. Can anyone give me any tips on watering, feeding and temps. (cool side hot side) My new hatchling is less than 24 hours old. I have him in a ten gallon tank on paper toweling. He has two hide boxes
Which do you all prefer basking light or under tank heat.
I have both available but chose basking light because I only have paper towel as my substrate.
Any tips by an experianced breeder will be appreciated. I have read books but am skeptical since the info in my bearded dragon book does not give proper basking temps for them it is too low.
Thanks, Sonia

UTH's are best because they provide belly heat that is necessary for proper digestion. The UTH will need to be hooked up to a thermostat or a rheostat. Adjust it so that the ground temp above the UTH is around 90 degrees.

Thanks, Josh I have a UTH and a thermostat do you turn the heat off at night or lower it? I chose a basking light to produce a day/night light cycle. Should I just use a reptisun for that.
Also do you provide water in a shallow lid. I offered water from an eye dropper and he drank but would like to know when I can switch to a shallow lid.
Thanks, Sonia

I leave the UTH on all the time and never turn it down, i try to keep it at a steady 89-90 degrees. I also dont have any special lighting for them, other than the light that gets turned on when i come in the room, and natural sunlight that comes through the windows a little. Yes, keep a shallow dish of water for them. For hatchlings, it could just be a gatorade cap.
