Question about UTH

azhketh Jun 05, 2007 06:13 PM

I've been surfing these forums for awhile, learning about what exactly I would need for a corn snake (I've never owned a snake before) and I had a question about under tank heaters. Would an attached UTH damage the surface the tank is sitting on? If so, is there something I can put under the UTH and tank to protect the surface? I would assume the surface will be something like wood or particle board; I haven't actually bought anything yet, since I wasn't sure if the UTH would cause any sort of damage, or become a fire hazard.

makes a great mounting surface for UTH. You just stick the UTH directly on the tile, then put the tile on top of your stand (or whatever). The UTH would be sandwiched between the tile and the outside bottom of the tank. Then you don't have to worry about overheating the stand surface, and if you want to switch the UTH to another tank, it is very easy! But if you mount the UTH onto the bottom of your tank, then you have to leave it there, as it can become a fire hazard if you peel it off to move it to another tank.

Ah, thanks. I saw someone else posting about ceramic tile, but I wasn't sure if it would actually protect the surface of a stand (which is what I was referring to in my first post, but I completely blanked on the word. All I could think of was cabinet. lol..).

under the ceramic tile, if you were still concerned about how hot it was getting. Just make sure that whatever you use is fireproof. You might want to put the ceramic tile with the UTH onto the stand for a few hours to see how hot the wood gets. Then if it still gets hot, put another ceramic tile under that. Remember that you will need the same number of tiles at the other end of the tank to make it level.
