hayley1912 Jun 05, 2007 07:25 PM

Hi,
Could someone let me know the ideal age, length and weight for a female rainbow to breed please?
Thanks.

I can't remember the weight for sure but I think it is arround 3 pounds.

As far as age it is generally best to wait until their third year before breeding them from what I've been told by various breeders.

I'm sure Dave, Jeff, or Frank will chime in here soon with more exact info though. Just thought I'd give you a general idea.

Sean.

Thanks for the info.

Have you any idea if this would differ slightly for a paraguayan Rainbow boa, or is it basically the same as brazilian?

Thankyou

I am confident Jeff Clark could answer that one

I talked to the only person I know of who has bred crassus and he said that his crassus were large compared to the alvarezi and asissi that he also worked with. I am not sure how to interpret that info though. My alvarezi and asissi females have reproduced at weights a little less than 1.5 pounds. They are both much smaller snakes than Brazilian Rainbows. I am not sure if crassus are enough larger than asissi and alvarezi to be BRB size or not. Did you get your crassus from Amazon Reptile Center?
Jeff

Some people have breed them in their second year.. but usually takes atleast 3 w/ 4 being better.

As for size, the males just have to be producing sperm..
the females need to be 5ft and better then 2 1/2lbs w/ 5'6" and 3lbs being better. BTW, if you are a gram fan.. 3lbs is around 1400 grams or so.

recommendations when I asked the same question, that would be for the females, males do not need to be that heavy, but should be at adult lengths in order to get desired results

said 3.5 is the recommended minimum, I have bred them lighter than that in the past, but I reconsidered my opinions and will use the "3.5 or greater concept"

The gang couldn't have said it better but I will say it again. IMO mimimum is 3 lbs (plus) and 2 1/2 years old at start of breeding. NOT all females will be ready at 2 1/2 years old. Is definately a judgement call to be made on a case by case basis.

I myself don't go by length but will say not overly fat to get to the minimum weight.

Another 1/2 pound of weight is recommended. I do go by grams myself and put my bottom limit at 1500 grams or 3.3 pounds.
