moldy egg

kevine Jun 05, 2007 07:46 PM

I've got a couple of batches of eggs that are stuck together and the top eggs were bad, well now they have started to mold. Will this hurt the other eggs? Is there something I can do to combat this? Kevin

I had this happen last year and the dead eggs molded and shriveled up and hardened w/o impacting the good egg they were attached to.

That's two molded shriveled eggs that died before the halfway point.

Those moldy eggs, (probably infertile), will not affect the other eggs unless they are infertile as well. Also check your temps and make sure it is not above 88 degrees during the day, and not below 75 at night for good results. I have always had great results by keeping my eggs at 84 degrees or - 1 degree for the entire time.
Also make sure that your eggs are not kept at too humid of conditions (example: Use 1 cup of water for every 2 cups of vermiculite - works great!) Only bury eggs no more than half way into the mix.
You COULD, (but I don't recommend it - not necessary) separate the bad eggs from the good eggs by SLOWLY pulling them apart if it is not too difficult. But you may risk rupturing a good egg in the process. So I generally don't do this. (Try not to turn any of the good eggs, it may kill the developing embryo). Hope this helps. Good luck!

OOps : Should have read: I have always had great results by keeping my eggs at 84 degrees PLUS or MINUS 1 degree for the entire time.

You may wanna leave everything as is. Sometimes ugly eggs hatch.

Oh man, I wouldn't think something like that would hatch. I'll just leave mine alone and see what happens. Nice whitewalls in the background. Kevin

I removed my three bad eggs - but they really stank.

Yeah, I learned from my late friend Ty Kubin, back when I was breeding, that a good egg is a good egg is a good egg. You can have eggs that look like that and still hatch!!!!!

I have seen eggs with golf course green mold all over them hatch in entire clutches.

A great example of my thoughts on eggs still hatching, regardless of what they look like Tom!
