A question about one of my Leos...

jag Jun 05, 2007 10:03 PM

I was recently inspecting one of my female Tr. Albinos and noticed a large black area beneath the skin. It was located above where eggs would normally develop. Any ideas as to what may have caused this? She has not sustained any trauma (dropped, squished, etc) and is not acting any different than she ever has.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

that sounds like an impaction. i've heard that blood poisoning could also cause a similar symptom. the best thing you can do is talk to a vet, maybe have your leo checked out by a vet. you can get some mineral oil, and in a dish put some shallow luke warm water (careful not to have the water be too hot, you can burn your leo that way), and put just a little bit of mineral oil in it, the mineral oil is a laxative and should help. a little mineral oil will go a long way. you can find it at the grocery store where other laxatives are.

what kind of substrate are you using? sand and other granular substrates are not recommended, leos that are not getting enough minerals from their diet will eat the sand, or, over time it can build up as they get just a little here and there when they are eating, in both cases the sand builds up and blocks the digestive system and can lead to death.

you can also try giving mineral oil orally, if you do this you only need to do a couple drops.

although impaction is always thought of first i had the same problem with my leo, it isn't (or in my case wasnt) anything harmful, my vet said it was the liver and internal organs etc, i even thought it might have been infertile eggs aswell, always best to check with the vet tho =)
