Sick retic

tou Jun 06, 2007 12:17 AM

I have a young male tiger retic (14 months, 10 ft) who was apparently healthy a day or two ago but when I got home today I noticed he was soaking more then usual so I checked him out and he seems very lethargic and almost limp. So far I've ruled out IBD because almost all cases involve mites which he doesn't have and I've ruled out dichlorvos poisoning because I don't use any pesticides or products containing the chemical as far as I am aware the only chemical I use in his enclosure is chlorhexidine. So far I have given him a hydration supplement, D3, and B12. None of the other retics in my collection are exibiting any signs of illness. I was just hoping someone on the site could think of anything.

the only time i had a similar problem was with an imported animal. he ended up getting a real bad shed and before i realized what to do he was very limp and lethargic. after i had soaked him for a week everyday he shed and his since became a normal crazy retic. if it is soaking i would consider this a real possibility. maybe hes just getting ready to shed or maybe he tried and couldnt. either way, just soak him and keep all parameters on track and you should be ok. just my 2 cents as im not a vet or anything close to it.

This most likely isn't a shedding issue. it's not his whole body that is limp it's just a small section around his heart. i'm currently awaiting for some blood cultures to get back to me. but thanks for the imput

with my vet. Snakes usually chronically soak, either because they have mites, are seeking a preferred temperature, and also to feel more secure in a small area. ( use as a hide box ). Since in addition to this the snake seems lethargic ( not normally an adjective used for a retic ) I would get him checked out to make sure the snake does not have anything that's fatal and or possibly contagious.
