Gravid females "shivering"??

Jeff Favelle Jun 06, 2007 01:43 AM

Has anyone witnessed this? This isn't my first gravid Boa, but this is the first time I have ever seen this type of rapid twitching. Much like when Burms maternally incubate eggs.......weird.

Should I be worried? Or is this just something normal that I have happened to miss over the years?

I haven't witnessed it, but just like an incubating python, this is probably thermoregulation, though I'll leave it to larger breeders to say for sure.

inverted and for lack of a better term, "vibrating / twitching" individual belly scales at different locations all over the snakes venter. Perhaps the "kinetic energy" creates heat that the snake can shunt to elevate their gestation temperatures to the ideal level for this species.

This was observed in pythons however, most notably Python reticulatus.

I would speculate boas possess such abilities as well, for this behavior has nothing to do with "brooding" a clutch of eggs.

It's done throughout gestation.
