I like big butts and I can not lie......

rainbowsrus Jun 06, 2007 11:21 AM

Pulled all my gravid girls out for a weigh in and photo shoot. Most were sweet as pie and I was able to
get pics of them easily. Only one or two gave me any grief.....

Listed in order by weight:

Eve, while not gravid, I didn't want to leave her out as She's progressing nicely. She came to me fairly
skinny at just over 1KG. Last night she weighed in at 1512 grams and is looking much better:

Next is Molly, one of my 2004 girls. The only one to nip at me. I even had to clean some of my own blood
from the cage top before taking her pic. I don't think she is gravid, still eating and not giving me any
good signs. Weighed in at 1805 Grams.

Now for the appear to be gravid girls......

Daisey, also from 2004, She's only had one meal in the last three months and is looking like she has a
small litter in her. Very much anticipated babies. She weighed in at 1652 Grams (down from a peak of
1777 grams)

Savannah, My rescue that is stunningly red. Also a very anticipated litter. She also has had only one
meal in the last three months. She weighed in at 1873 grams, down from a peak of 2134 grams.

Clover, one of my 2001 holdback. She's had nothing to eat in the last three months. Weighed in at 2967
grams, down from a peak of 3394 grams.

Betty, One of my high colored females from Howard Leong. Also not eating, weighed in at 3060 grams.
Down from 3447 grams.

Wilma, The other high colored female from Howard, also not eating. She weighed in at 3136 grams, down
from 3493 grams.

Bullseye, my other 2001 holdback. Not eating and weighed in at 3145 grams, down from 3475 grams.

Boo, My most prolific breeder to date AND one that was almost sold due to non production. Her first
few litters were nothing but slugs. I gave up on her and had her for sale at a show as a pet. Had
a couple of interested buyers but nobody came up with the cash so back into the colony she went. The
very next year BAM, 31 babies. High 20's every year since. She produced the litter including the
eclipse and blush babies last year. She's been eating, 4 meals in the last three months but she was
also the female with the least fat reserves. She weighed in at 3268, down from a peak of 3275

She wouldn't play nice and go under the bowl, so I had to pull the "put in tub, invert tub and
remove tub leaving snake laying on lid" trick

And last up is Petunia. She's from 1993 and is my largest breeder. She's in shed and didn't want to
curl up so is more stretched out than the rest. Weighed in at 3386 grams, down from 3985 grams.

I found that Chester had shed last night so just had to get a freshly shed pic of him:

Then I pulled out his brother Cyrus. Was obvious why Cyrus was the holdback, even with Chester
just shed, Cyrus IMO edged him out as having brighter colors.
(Chester's on the left)

Yeah, they were a major score!!!!

Bought Chester from a store. later I asked some history questions and that eventually got me hooked up with the actual breeder who offered one of his holdbacks. Bought that one (Cyrus) for less than Chester!!

Haha I guess thats what happens when you buy from a store huh(jacked up prices). Either way I can see it was well worth whatever price you paid.

Ike

rainbowsrus Jun 06, 2007 12:59 PM

The prices from the store were actually quite good $1650 (plus tax). I'd seen the same two animals, Chester and a third brother in the ads for the last several months. I believe they started out at $2150. I and others (I've been told so since buying them) had been looking at them and pondering getting one. I was gonna be in Los Angelas anyways so I decided to have a look in person. (Duh, was expecting to come home with one) I picked out Chester, although a bit smaller than the other, was noticeably brighter.

I'm sure the breeder actually made more from selling directly to me than he got from the store he "wholesaled" them to. Probably more of a consignment deal. I do understand, business is business and all involved need to make an overall profit.

When Jason (the breeder) contacted me with details about Chester, after several emails back and forth he indicated he might have an "extra" holdback male and would I be interested. DUH, YEAH!! After seeing pics and hearing a lower price $1650 shipped......done deal. I've already been offered $2000 for either one of them! Not for sale but does feel good to know someone is ready and willing to spend more than what you paid.

Bob

rainbowsrus Jun 06, 2007 03:06 PM

Without her support and approval, my collection (and it's production possibilities and capabilities) would be nowhere neare where it is today. It's her support and approval that allowed me to spend up front on bringing in new babies instead of building from within and trading to get new blood and/or morphs.

I actually stress more about all I've invested than she does. Her point, and a very valid one at that, is even as the individual morph markets decline in price point for a baby, the growing babies I have are appreciating in value as they approach breeding age. Much if not all of what I have invested could be recovered simply by selling off the collection. (don't hold your breath on that one)

Actually does bring up a very good point. My wife and I have already discussed - How to handle/dispose of the collection if something were to happen to me. I think I'm gonna enlist two of my friends to sign up to help. Not planning on needing them but you never know!!

BTW, on topic as an example, when I was 9, I was working one evening in March on a soapbox derby car (the mini ones in boy scouts) with my dad. He was 35 years old. He passed away that night in his sleep, brain aneurism. No warning, just there one evening, gone the next morning.

sorry to hear about your father like that and I also lost my father but I was 16 and he was married to my mother for 27 years so things were difficult for us. We lost him to lung cancer after finding out in about July and was supposed to have about a year left since it was in his bones and he made it til Nov. 3, 1997. It was very hard seeing my father dwindling away and chemo took its toll on him. I say dwindle cuz he weighed about 220 going in the ordeal and left about 185. The last 2 weeks of his life he didn't even recognize me from the drugs at the hospital and it took a very long time to get over that. The worst things happen to the best of people and it is sort of a reality check too. Ever since I have been going to church (not to long) they had that Virginia Tech shooting I believe and I think of all those kids that didn't know that was their last day on earth and what they would have done different. I try to live my life like today is my last day and try my hardest to be at peace with everyone around me and spread joy to everyone I meet. Sorry for rambling again Dave but certain subjects I just can't help.
Bob

rainbowsrus Jun 06, 2007 04:57 PM

Sorry to hear about your father also.

It really sucks to see tham waste away like that!. Lost a couple of friends to cancer in the last four years. Both of which were good people and both of which the cancer just ate them away.

Losing my father like that did teach me to live life and cherish every moment. Rarely a day goes by I don't think of him!!

BUT, Insane is easier to say and or remember. For the record Bob, I google or look up in the dictionary any word I am curious about. Intelligence has nothing to do with acquired knowledge, monkeys can memorize lists of objects. It's ones comprehension level ( ability to understand concepts) that is a marker of intelligence as far as I am concerned.

Long ago we used to call woman STUPID, but we also, at the same time, forbade educating them.

humm,

so now we have educated woman "out smarting us"

instead of "ignorant" women doing so.

who's the big big dummy, since the beginning of time no less.

Something, I think most men, fail to figure out and or acknowledge.

Never underestimate a woman!!!!!!!!!

and I realize about how much is in ur distinct collection but I never could buy an adult snake though really. I really truly enjoy raising a snake and giving him the attention he or she needs every day or week and that is the rewarding part in my book. And after my breedable subject is of age then that will be next reward but I wasn't implying that should sell any of your collection cuz I know after looking at each and every snake everyday there is a bond that is formed and I truly believe that comment that Frank made awhile back. If you plan on buying an animal(s) you should plan on keeping them forever so that is a philosophy that we both share but seriously all the times I tell you I want Hook and such I could never buy an adult cuz raising them and watching them grow is much like watching your kid(s) grow which I'm sure that brings about a certain happiness that is very hard to describe especially when you see them succeed at anything and prolly breeding may bring about a similar feeling. Sorry for rambling again. I can't wait for late August and how is that female bci doing-anyday now huh?

bob. I would buy Daisy faster then fly's find [bleep]!!!

even though I too enjoy raising them from neonates.

The reason I do not buy "adults" as a typical purchase is because most times I fear there is something wrong with them and the seller is getting rid of them for a reason he / she has not disclosed ( functional infertile for instance )

Trust issues that I possess in regards to most people in this hobby.

But, I do know and also am rather confident that Dave's animals where not raised or cared for improperly in any way.

So with that being said, I would be more than happy to take / buy Daisy off his hands. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting though.

After looking at all the "lovely" creatures.

I have to say based on my preferences for "colors and patterns" combined in any one snake.

Daisey by far, won hands down, like I said, all are very nice specimens, but she just catches my eye in overall appearance.

PS: she does "look" to be gravid, like you said, perhaps a small litter, but she does have that special "look" about her.

Time will tell, I hope so, since I like her "overall appearance" the most.

I have charged a certain % more on many different types of reptiles. I do not see a problem with an animals pricing being based on a "grading" system. It seems illogical not to think one snake ( although from the same parents/litter/clutch ) can be worth more monetarily than one of it's conspecific's.

Although charging more to be on that "waiting list" would be pushing it a little. Even though you are joking about that. The reason I say pushing it a little, is because, I would seriously consider paying such a levy, if it ensured, I would get a specimen whom upon maturation looked ANYTHING like Daisy!!!!

I don't know if you caught the posts on the boa forums that include Motley siblings that looked pretty good but their offspring from these normals looked real good so if that were proven true later on I would imagine then just coming from Daisy even the lesser appealing animals could have the potential of producing something great and therefore demand a higher price than a brb that looked the same from a different litter. Dave you and Frank agree? It's kind of like an ugly duckling that came from Tom Burke's best Lipstick Albino, that albino although not appearing to be like the best in appearances but still it came from his best looker, make sense and what are y'alls comments on the matter?
Bob

FRoberts Jun 06, 2007 03:13 PM

It would appear so, they all carry them same genes, if line breeding is being utilized there is a high likelihood that mutant genes are expressed in the next generation of babies. Which could change probable results. ( I mean excessive inbreeding ) . Since Dave is no in any way using excessive line breeding the result en offspring should follow such a pattern as you have described in your post.

So far I have done MINIMAL line breeding. As a matter of fact, the ONLY line breeding I have done as of yet would be Clover and Bullseye. Tnhey came from a breeding colony including Lefty and Porky. Don't know which one was the father.

I do actually plan on more line breeding but like you said not excessive and will always be disclosed!!!

For example, thinking about breeding Pheonix back to his mother Savannah next year. Double dose high red babies...oouh lah lah

And of course the whole Genesis project will require some level of inbreeding to isolate the genes. Then outcrossing to improve vigor.

Yes, when talking non-morphs and even low expression morphs. Lesser looking siblings of insane animals could have the capability of throwing insane babies.

I look at it this way, babies will have a color distribution in a bell curve around the color of the parents. Start with higher color parents and you'll get higher average color babies. Those lower end of the curve babies can still throw insane cousins, just not as many.

I have and will price individual animals based on their individual characteristics. Not just the morph status. Daisey-like babies for example. There is a HIGH demand for them and I could easily sell them for much more than a typical normal. I myself have bought a few of the "non morph" BRB babies in my collection at twice-ish "normal" price because I thought they were special (still do and not sorry at all that I spent what I did) and Daisey still blows them away.

And NO, I won't charge for a spot on the wait list. Demand is plenty high enough and will have no problem selling as many as I can produce!! IMO the waitlist is for those that have the foresight to see how intense the parent is, how insane the babies could be and clearly see how fast they will litterally fly out of the tubs when offered up for sale.

I've seen ads wanting a percent downpayment for babies not even born yet. Not how I want to run my biz!! Only reason to ever do that IMO would be to drum up some cash and give a deep discount for those that paid up front!

The very first Brazilian female I ever bred was as dark or a little darker than Petunia. When I mean darker, I am referring to the other patterning being less visible.

For the record she produced some very, very nice babies!!!

She was so dark red, it looked almost black. When bred to a very lightly colored deep red male, the babies where usually mixed in such a way they where stunning in appearance. I was selling them for between 100 & 150 a piece depending on appearence. I never held any back, ended to disseminating my entire snake collection except for a few boas and pythons I refused to part with and started over from scratch a few years back, which is why most of my collection is just starting to reach adulthood, sometimes the results of the divorce process really BLOW.

All's good now!!!

cook a mean lasagna (my favorite food in the world) even though I live in the seafood capital of the world. Italian food is by far the best of any food bar none. I love Olive Garden too btw-I always get the Tour of Italy 2 parts lasagna and one part chicken parmesian and no fettucini (yuck) with about 3-4 iced teas and 3 bowls of salad yummy yummy in my tummy

Bob,
...I like the Olive Garden too. We also have some pretty good real Italian restaurants here in Savannah. When I am in Daytona or Orlando or Charlotte I like the Beppo di Buca. Really good Italian food and lots of it served family style.

Yeah, Buca's is great! We have them in MN too, and Olive Garden started here (part of General Mills at one time); apparently copied from a local restaurant called Ciatti's (now defunct).

The Penne Arabiata (sp?) at Buca is to die for!!! We usually get an order of spaghetti with the meat sauce on the side and a side of marinara (vegetarian daughter). Add a spoonfull of the meat sauce to the Penne Arabiata and yummy!!

Funny thing is, near my house, Buca and Olive garden face each other on opposite sides of a main street!
