Pine snake/ Bull snake

I read that a pine snake is the same as a Bull Snake is this true?

They use to all be classified under the species Pituophis melanoleucus - but were different subspecies (there are actually several subspecies of pine snakes).

Some field guides still have that classification.

The species has (rightfully) been split up.

Bull snakes that use to be Pituophis melanoleucus sayi are now part of the western Gopher snake species - and are classified as Pituophis catenifer sayi.

The pine snakes retain the Pituophis melanoleucus species name (with several subspecies)
