A sexing question

bpfreak Jun 07, 2007 11:57 AM

I bought an albino ball about a year ago and the person who sold it to me said it was a female. I probed it when i got it and it seemed like it was a female; it probed 'a long 3 or short 4', which generally means that it should be a female. Now the snake is over 800g and i decided to both pop and probe it (because i was planning on buying a dbl het albino/pied male.. so i wanted to be sure) when i popped it it definitely looked like a 'juvi male' it had small red spurs, but when i probed it again it still probed to the same depth. I guess i'm just wanting to be 100% sure here and just want to know if it has red spurs it is definitely a male.

Sorry that was long-winded, but any opinions would be great.
Thanks!

As they get older there muscles are strong enough to keep you from a successful pop unless they are totally relaxed . And you will see what looks like a small hempen that is a gland and to the untrained eye it will appear to be male . If it is infact only probing 3-4 scales that is what I would trust . Like I said juveniles and adults are hard to pop unless they won’t to be popped ether wise they won’t relax enough to allow for it to happen . David of DS Reptile Rescue

The problem is not poping. I did that succesfully. It looked like the equvilant of a juvi male, with red spurs, but did not look like an adult hemipene even though the snake is 800g. So i didn't know whether or not to trust the pop or the probe... basically. i guess i should post a pic.
Thanks

I had one a week or two ago that would probe deep then shallow then deep then shallow again and it would not pop correctly until we deadened the back end of the snake to get the muscles to relax and we found it to be a hermaphrodite . My point being that you may not be getting a good pop and you can see glands on females that resemble small hemipeans and if you mash to hard will make them red like a small vane is ruptured . David

David only you could find a he/she. Hemipenes are red and protrude when popping. There is no mistakeing them for a gland.
Even adult snakes can be popped when done correctly.
