Sunglow Surprise 113 POS...a lot more...

JJsBoas Jun 08, 2007 03:57 AM

Well here's the story:

Back in 2001, I bought a pair of hypos from an IRBA show in San Diego. The pair came from some who did business as Legal Addictions out of Las Vegas. I bought the pair for a more than reasonable fair market price (in other words, cheap!!). All I thought I had bought was a nice pair of hypos. Thank goodness I was wrong!!

Prior to this breeding season, the male had sired 2 previous litters with normal females (1 in 2004 and the other in 2006, both producing 1/2 hypos and 1/2 normals). Also last year, the female was bred to a normal male and had a nice litter of hypos resulting in 1/2 hypos and 1/2 normals. This year, I decided to put the two hypos together. The reason I hadn't paired them together before was because, from my understanding when I bought them, I thought they were siblings from the same litter and I generally do not like to breed two closely related animals. I'm actually still not sure if they are siblings or not because I don't know what ever happened to the breeder. Anyway, I bit the bullet and put them together to see what kind of possible super hypos they could produce, because from their past separate litters they were giving me some real nice hypos.

Well the female was due May 30 (105 days POS), but she obviously was not ready at that time. She had me losing sleep for over a week. She looked great throughout her entire gestation, so I wasn't too worried. I just wanted to see those babies.

So before I left for class this afternoon, I gave her cage a good spraying with water, hoping that would do something (I also gave her a cage a good spray this morning when I woke up). I was gone about 8 hours. I don't if the spraying did it, or she was just ready to go, but when I got back I found a SWEEEEEEEEETTTTTTT Surprise. Possible Super SUNGLOWS!!! ALBINOS!!! And some Possible DH Super Sunglows and Poss het albinos!!!

This is like lightning striking twice for me because last year I bred a female Anery Poss Het Snow with a male Normal Het Anery (confirmed with the breeder - NO Albino genes whatsoever), and a premie SNOW popped out (unfortunately the little snow didn't make it).

Needless to say, I was running around like a nutbag trying to figure out what to do. I have had boa litters before, but never anything like this.

Anyway, enough narrative. Here are some pics: first pic is the dam after giving birth, second pic is the sire, third pic is the group of babies in the cage after removing the momma.

Hope you all enjoy,

Jay

Well, I really haven't gotten a solid count because I could barely think when I was removing the babies from the cage. But from my raw "estimate," that wonderful DH Sunglow female of mine gave me: 5 Poss Super Sunglows, 4 Albinos, about 10 Poss DH Super Sunglows, about 10 Poss Het Albinos, AND 1 Paradox-looking Poss Super Sunglow!!! Everyone appears healthy (keeping fingers crossed and knocking on wood) and NO Premies. Also NO SLUGS. Man, I'm really proud of this momma.

That paradox looking boa really threw me onto cloud 9. I don't know if the pic will show, but the small black spots/smudges are NOT from the newspaper. I haven't seen the tongue color yet either. But From my eyes, it sure does look like a paradox of some sorts. Unfortunately, this paradox has a bit of an overbite But it's not like that lil one is going anywhere

Well, here are some pics: first pic is one of the paradox, second pic is another of the paradox, third pic is one of the sunglows and albinos.

Hope you all enjoy,

Jay

Thanks Mike,

I'm stoked to say the least. I never thought this kind of a surprise would happen to hobbyist like me. But yes, from how they looked when I removed them, none of them have any big bellies Maybe, that's why the momma took an extra week to give birth. I guess mother knows best

Thanks again Mike.

Here are some pics of the Poss DH Super Sunglows and Poss Het Albinos. There a few poss DHs that are super clean, with thin saddles and barely a speck of black. I cannot wait to see how these turn out after their first shed

A few of the "normal" Poss Het Albinos have a real crisp, contrast to their pattern. Their background color is that of a hypo, but they have a bit too much black around the saddles and tail to be considered a hypo (at least IMHO). Still, I'm tempted to hold on to these high contrast, standout normals. We shall see I guess

Here are the pics of the Poss DH Super Sunglows and Poss Het Albinos.

Enjoy.

Well, I'm in shock over here. It's way past my bed time, not like I'm gonna get much sleep anyway, with these cool new babies over here. I had a premie/slugged out litter a few weeks ago, and this definitely makes up for that unfortunate mess.

Well, I don't know if any of you bought hypos from the same breeder that I bought this pair from back in 2001. But all I can say is, if you do happen to own some hypos from the same breeder, breed them to an albino or a het and see what comes of it By the way, this pair (now DH Sunglow pair ) of mine are late 2000 models. It took me a while to find out this SWEEEET surprise, but never late than never. Also, I'm assuming these guys are Kahl strain (wouldn't that be the jackpot if these were somehow also Sharp Strain poss super sunglows)

Last pics of the night: a group shot and another shot of the sunglows and albinos.

Time for me to finish cleaning that gloriously messy gooey cage and get a meal into my new favorite female !!!!

We'll see how much sleep I get tonight.

All the best to you all,

Jay

the first low left in the last pics is very very beautiful
sorry for my english you have pics of him

JJsBoas Jun 08, 2007 10:24 AM

Hello Simonesantini,

I think you're talking about the lone "paradox" poss super sunglow that popped up in the litter. I posted a couple pics of this boa above. I haven't taken any additional pics yet because I don't want to bother the babies too much. But the "paradox" looks like a sunglow, however, it has a few spots and smudges of black coming thru. Very weird. I will definitely post a lot more pics in the coming weeks after their first sheds.

Thanks for the compliments.

I'm still in disbelief this morning. Seeing the sunglows was bad enough. When I turned the "paradox" sunglow over and saw what it was, my jaw hit the floor. I still can't help but to take the tub cover off and just stare at those sunglows.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Hey Dave,

I still can't wrap my head around my dumb luck. When I bought the pair back in the fall of 2001, they were already almost yearlings since the breeder told me they were late 2000 babies. The breeder did not mention any possibility of either being het albino. I can't remember clearly, but I'm thinking DH Sunglows (even poss DH's) were a pretty penny back in 2001. But this guy sold them to me at the price of basic, "normal" hypos Just my dumb luck, I guess, that BOTH end up being DH Sunglows

Then the Paradox!! Man, I don't how that little thing got into the mix.

More pics are surely on the way. I just need to stop myself from looking into the sunglow & albino tub every half hour

Crazy odds indeed!!! Time for me to buy a lottery ticket

kblumenthal Jun 08, 2007 12:06 PM

That's a terrific surprise, and a magnificent litter! I think this more than makes up for the disappointment earlier this year ! That Paradox should be really cool looking after he/she sheds and as he gets older he should be a looker - enjoy!

Thanks Kevin,

I've got two other litters expected in July, but this one is undoubtedly my favorite of this year That bad premie/slug litter last month was a big disappointment, but I was more concerned with that female because I just wanted her to be healthy since she looked so horrible during gestation. But dude, this sunglow surprise is nuts!!! I would never have thought that BOTH hypos were actually DH sunglows!!

I'll keep everyone posted with pics after the first shed. Now I just hope that they all eat in week or two.

Thanx for the kind words.

Thanks for sharing Greg

JJsBoas Jun 08, 2007 01:47 PM

Thanks Greg,

Holy cow is right!!! I can't repeat the words I really blurted out at the first sight of the sunglows in the cage My excitement grew even more once I removed the momma and lifted a couple layers of newspaper, only to reveal even more sunglows and albinos. Dude, I'm still dumbfounded right now.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Shane Kinney Jun 08, 2007 05:58 PM

Definitely some good odds and nice babies. Were they supposed to be poss hets or just regular hypos not het for anything?

JJsBoas Jun 08, 2007 06:32 PM

Sunglow odds were definitely in my favor with this litter.

As for your question, I bought the pair back in 2001 as ONLY a pair of hypos. The breeder did NOT mention whatsoever any possibility of them being het for albino as well. In fact, for the price he sold them to me, he either mistakenly didn't know they were possible DH sunglows or simply wanted to sell his remaining hypos. I don't know what the price of DH sunglows were back in 2001, but I bought the parents to this litter for the price that normal hypos/salmons are going for these days

That's about all I have from my records. I'll say it again, just dumb luck on my part, I guess.

Anyway, thanks again. All the best to you and your breeding projects this year.
