Kingsnake eating its own poop

tylototriton Jun 08, 2007 10:26 AM

This is a new one to me. My teacher has a kingnsnake that has been eating its own fecal matter. Other than this strange behavior the snake is healthy. It is active, alert, and eating. I can think of no reason why a snake would eat its own fecal matter unless there was a nutritional deficiency, but im just not sure. Any ideas?

Coprophagia (poop eating) is not unknown in the reptile world, and is actually quite common. I don't see it to often in snakes, but it is not unknown. There is nothing to worry about, and keeping the cage clean is a simple method to avoid this gross behavior.
