cleaning crickets

Hissenia Jun 08, 2007 01:17 PM

I have feeder crickets for my sav that i keep in a rubbermaid about 25"x 15" with a screen lid. I get 1000 at a time but ive noticed 10 -15 dying off every few days. I feed them romaine. the crickets ate about half a head over night and left a mess behind.

whats the best way to keep a fresh cricket bin? How often should i clean the whole thing out? I also have a problem with tiny little nats getting in there with them.
Thanks

We have bins at work (pet store) that are probably 24X15 and we dump 3000 in each each week. Cleaning is a daily thing of shaking out the egg cartons, scraping the bottom with a heavy plastic blade(like a piece of plexi, we use a broken letter from the marquee sign) Scrap all the dead and crap to one end, toss in the cartons so the crix all go to them and then dust pan out the pile of dead. Do this a bit at a time so you can flick off the live crix as you go. Wash out the dish we put cricket drink in and toss in some fish food. Same thing each day. Once a week or so we empty the bin (usually by selling out of bugs) and wash it out with hot water and scrubbing.
