Hey everyone, I live here in Southern California ( Granada Hills to be exact ) I found this guy in my yard, took some pictures, and let him go in a really secluded area by my down the street.
Its a Pacific Gopher snake right?

Don't think so, pacifics are the only gophers I have much experience with and they look quite different from that.
If I was to hazard a guess I'd say San Diego Gopher Snake but I am only taking a guess aas I do not know the socal range of various subspecies and am not very familiar with non pacific gophers.
Sean.
There may be some locality variance in what they look like.
I'm not sure where Granada Hills is. If it is in LA - then according to the range map at
www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/p.c.annectens.html
it may be San Diego or San Diego / Pacific integrade.
I've only kept pacific gophers and a single Sonoran - vast majority of my pacific gophers were west Contra Costa county, CA. My current Pac Gopher is Shasta county, CA - and while I couldn't pin exactly what it is, it does have a slightly different look to it.
Last year on the way home from Disneyland - I found a huge gopher at a rest stop - north side of the grapevine. It was a pacific by range map but was certainly different than any pacific I had seen up northern california way. I did not keep him. I suppose it was possible it had some San Diego influence. Anyway - it was far more stout than any gopher snake I had ever seen in the wild before, almost like a Bull Snake.

Probably a San Diego gopher. Great find, this year has been real slow on account of the dryness.

Congratulations on your find! If it's in Granada Hills, then it's a San Diego (P.c. annectens). Like Metalpest said w/ all the dryness it is a slow year for herpers, but Gophers and Rattlers seem to be out @ times anyway. I'm out near you (Chatsworth) in the SFV, and I've found several San Diegos this year. They are great snakes, and adjust very well to captivity.

yep thats what it be, i just got me one out in the desert here in lassen county, 20mi's out in the middle of nowhere(see link above for pic's)
