Celibate Mice?

eminart Jun 08, 2007 04:53 PM

How long does it take to start getting some babies? I've had some mice for probably 2 months now with no babies in sight. Admittedly, I had some health problems in the beginning and had to replace some of them, but I replaced them with mice of the same age that were being housed in a co-ed environment. I thought surely some of those or the ones I already had would have some babies by now.

I think I have the most prudish mice on earth.

Yes, I'm sure. At the moment I have 1.4 although one of the females is too young to breed. And the temps are in the low seventies.

I'm tempted to say that they've found religion, but maybe I just need to give them more time due to all the shuffling about because of some dying, substrate and tank changes, etc.

It seems like the mice I have right now take about a month past expected time to start breeding. Once they do they go gangbusters. So it may be worth your wait.
Not knowing how old they were when you started.....I usually start with 6 wk olds or so and let them go a month.
That said....if they were sick, how sick? I find that once some plagues go through the breeding is never right. So if I have more than one mouse in a group get sick and freezer them all and start again.

Well, none of the one's I have right now were ever sick. The ones that did get sick (all from Petco) I quickly dispatched of. Basically, only one of the mice I have now was ever exposed to any of the sick ones. She never showed any symptoms and everything was cleaned and started over.

I'm probably just being impatient. But, I haven't been able to find any mice in my city the right size for my 10 hatchlings. I've been having to get them from a pet store about an hour's drive from where I live. I kept thinking I'd have my own babies before I had to go back, but it just hasn't happened yet. I'm making the trip again tomorrow, but it's a combo trip to see my family at least.

There are a couple of other things...

Where is there cage?

If it is somewhere that people (or other animals) are always walking by. They could be getting spooked and be having a hard time settling in.

Do you look in on them all the time?

Is their light cycle normal?

Are you playing music really loud?

I'm going to bed now. It took me three tries to spell "loud".

Or you could raise deer. You'd probably have to get bigger snakes, maybe even crocs....

No, I don't want to go through the whole permit thing with the deer.

As far as the mice, they're actually in a back utility room where there's not much traffic. I pretty much leave them alone except to feed or water them. The light cycle is normal. There's no loud noises. They are actually pretty tame. They pay little attention to me when I am back there. They even come out to investigate when I open the top to the aquarium to feed them or whatever. I don't think they're stressed in any way. I'm thinking I just need to give them more time. There's one or two that I sometimes suspect may be pregnant. We'll see.

I know when I am planning to kick up production for hatchling snakes I set up more mouse groups about the time the eggs are laid. Then, 2 months later when the eggs hatch I have just started in getting pinks. Since most of what I have need TINY pinks this works out best for us.
