want to expand collection of herps

uropat Aug 16, 2003 06:36 PM

hi everyone, I have had 2 mali uromastyx for about a year and have decided to get another kind of lizard this year to widen my collection of lizards. I was wondering if anione could recommend another kind of lizard that is great to keep as a pet with requirements about as simple as a uro. I would also like it to be good for getting handled. Does anione have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Pat

maybe a bearded...they are pretty simple, and desert like uros. But they do eat crickets. I am looking for soemthing to put in my extra tank now since my female can be with rico...i was thinking either frogs, or leos...one of those two but i ahve no idea which to get!!!!
Good luck!

I think leos would be pretty cool. I've looked them over and they come in so many different morphs too. Leos are also relatively inexpensive. Frogs do not usually handle too well and can be expensive.
Perhaps my opinion is a little biased since I'm hoping (in the next few years) to get some super hypo tangerine leos.

i am definatly leaning towards leos. i will probably get two this week. I can't afford those super hypos tangs even tho they are awesome. I'll get some pics as soon as i get some, i also need some pics of my girl.

If you really want to look for a good type of lizard go to the lizard classifides in king Snake. They have so many different kinds of lizards for sale there. If you want a easy going tame, and colorful i would get a bearded dragon. You can get red, orange, white, and basically any other cool color. So look around before you choose something.

This is the first leo I bought and my favowitz

This is my latestpurchase who will be my stud for my girls

An this is my other girl

And if leos arent youre taste try a crestie

the care for beardies is very very similar, and they are supposed to have very mild temperaments.

Im thinking about getting another lizard myself, and I was considering a yellow ackie. Can you tell me about yours, basically just anything you could tell me I would apreciate. Behavior, tameness, etc..

And can you feed them a different diet than crix and the occasional pinky??

Thanks
Jack

I have been researching ackies for some time now and they seem that they would be well suited as first time monitors. They are not very big and can be kept in groups. Emily (npohworks) has two and was kind enough to e-mail a few times with excellent information. Of course they are quite different than uros, they are after all, monitors. Good luck.

The only thing is that they say monitors are really epensive to keep. But my guess is that they are refering to the bigger ones who need rodents every day and since ackies eat crix it wont be as expensive right???

Compared to uros, ackies are a really big thing to take on. they need temperatures that are just about as high as uros but a lot more space. they don't just need hide spots, but also things to climb on, with plenty of different height levels under the basking spots to thermoregulate. my yellow ackies are about 15" and 19", all muscle. if you think a uro can motor if it wants to get away from you, you should see a monitor. their diet at our house consists of approx 2 pinkies a day, with some crickets thrown in for variety. dusted about every other feeding. the only other thing they ever eat with us is maybe 1 superworm for a treat or, if we can't get pinks or crix, some ground turkey, but thats a last resort. the rodents are the best for them, and the cost can definitely rack up if youcompare it to what it costs to care for a uro. our ackies are about to move into a 65 gallon tank which really should be considered the bare minimum when housing a pair (we don't have room for anything bigger). at LEAST 6" of a dirt or dirt/sand substrate is needed, the more the merrier. they need big water dishes and fresh water all the time. etc etc etc.

all that said, i adore my ackies. they certainly are more exciting to watch, especially when they eat! ours are exceptionally calm and like to crawl up on our heads. they do not, however, take much to holding, rather they let you sit there while they climb on you. but you can't take your eyes off them for a second, if i walk too close to a counter while the girl's on my shoulder she takes a kamikaze leap for it. they are very tough and sturdy lizards, but an expensive undertaking. you can maintain ackies on mostly crickets, however it can really stunt their growth. the rodents don't stink as much either, especially if you buy frozen.

hope that helps, let me know if you need any more info.

Yeah helps allot,

actually Id prefer feeding rodents over crix, specialy large crix!

I know about the setup and I would provide adecuate substrate and a retes stack for it.

The only thing that bothers me from what you said is " they do not, however, take much to holding, rather they let you sit there while they climb on you."
Im gonna have to think about that.

Thanks
Jack

most monitors, if you try to hold them in your hand or hold still at all, will do nothing but squirm. you'll most likely never have a dwarf monitor that will conk out on the couch with you and watch soap operas. i can take roxie or eddie out and they will crawl up on my shoulder while i walk around and such, but if i sit down on the couch they will try to run off. it's in their nature, it's not so much to get away from you as it is to explore, they really want to see everything and holding still, unless they are basking, just isn't their thing. the only monitors that "hold still" are the big ones like black throats.

maybe you should do like i did and get yourself an egyptian

The thing is I actually LOVE the power, alertness & Grace of Monitors. They'r just magnificent!!
If I had the room Id love to get one of the bigger ones, maybe a dumerils or something like that.
In a reptile store I go to allot in LI they had a dumerils which was always trying to open the door of his cage, and was actually sliding it in the right way too, and when they took him out hes like a big puppy just staying in your arms.
I also want a B & W Tegu love those too.
Actually the place Im gonna live in for the next few months has a lot of room, but the problem is that after that I dont know where Ill be.
Kinda sucks, acutally really sucks, space and me having to move are the only things that are keeping my herp collection from growing. And me from getting the animals Id like.
Thats actually the only thing I would like at this point in my life!
Put it like this If I had my own permanent house 10% of the space would be for me and the rest would be for herps and other animals LOL
I just love em!

Oh Well

Bearded dragons are the friendliest lizards in the same general price and size range as your uros. They dont' need quite as much heat, need more water, and do need crickets. If you'd like something fun to watch and nocturnal but not quite as handleable a crested gecko is really cool. They have prehensile tails and are like little monkeys if you have a good vivarium setup for them to play around in. -Lucy
