Dekay's Brown snake, Storeria dekayi. Some of them are actually pretty nicely colored.

I lurk here a lot but seldom reply. It may be my imagination, but in the pictures you show of the brown snake, it seems to have a different shaped head than the original poster's picture. My first thought was some kind of garter snake. I suppose it would help to know what part of the country you are each in.
