HH,
Thanks. That's pretty much the whole nut and nutshell. The summer internship is now where many zoos are drawing from to hire permanent keepers. St. Louis and Brookfield would get a stack of intern applications several inches deep. We looked for solid biological background and herp care experience. I DID check references on those applicants we were interested in. It is wise to network. Show up once or twice a week and talk to the keepers. As they get to know you, you may learn about openings, etc... before everyone else and have a slight advantage because the staff knows you.

Nice addition, AH! Especially - " It is wise to network. Show up once or twice a week and talk to the keepers."

This puts a face & personality with your name. It also shows determination, drive. Just remember, greggy, there's a difference between being persistent and being a pest.

Now, go get 'em!!!

One last thing ....... I hope you have money saved up because you won't make any working at a zoo. hahahahahahahh! I make more teaching in a little podunk town in Missouri after 3 years than I did at St. Louis Zoo after 7 years.

Greggy, if you want particulars from the zoo, like breeding, click on my name at the top of the post and send me a message.

Thanks to everyone for all the words of advice. AHamp- What sp. have you bred at the zoos you worked at? Also - TO anyone else that has worked or works at a zoo reptile house. How would you compare keeping reptiles in a zoo w/ keeping at home? Thanks.
