Wow, this part really sucks...

I haven't posted much here recently, but those of you that have been here for a while have seen photos of Dexter that I have posted over the years... He just passed his 7th birthday a few weeks ago. He had a pretty rough breeding season this winter (read: obnoxious pain in the butt) and didn't eat much for almost 2 months. This spring he began to eat like a pig, but starting several weeks ago he began to noticeably loose weight... I brought him to the vet for a blood test but that only showed he was slightly dehydrated (we were thinking kidney failure, but apparently the test didn't indicate that) we also did a fecal exam in case it might be a parasite problem, that came back negative (clean actually) as well... So, now it's looking like some form of cancer. He is loosing fat and muscle mass despite eating massive amounts of food. He is also having an issue with his tongue and needs help to keep the food in his mouth, and beginning to show coordination problems... It's sad to see him this way, but so far he still has tons of energy and is trying his best to be a pain in the butt (and keep me in line). He also still has an overwhelming urge to molest his iguana toy... I'm not sure how long he's got, but unless something magically changes, I don't see this going on for a whole lot longer. Despite his normally grandeur stature, he is not looking so great now (down to 7.7 pounds from 11 or 12), he almost appears to be disintegrating. I'm still waiting to hear back from my vet regarding a course of action from here on out, but I'm afraid whatever we do it will be to simply comfort him and not much else... Which I find seriously disturbing considering everything I've done to care for him I am completely helpless here. All I can do is let him get all the sun he wants now and give him whatever food he will eat... I am not looking forward to this...

This is from last year (his birthday last Spring):

Dude, I feel for you. I honestly do. Your ig is absoultely, NO JOKE, the most beautiful, healthy, prime iguana I have ever seen. Whenever ig owners on the chat ask about iguanas, I show them a picture of Dexter and say, "EVERY iguana should look like this!" Dont be down, know you did a better job than just about everyone. Be glad he became so awesome. He's the iguana people look at and say HOLY COW! He became perfect and every way and be proud of it.

Hope he gets better!

Hi Adam,

Sounds like something similar to what I just lost my girl too (she is in the picture at the top of the page). She was so sick and lost tons of weight (from over 10 to about 7), but all of her blood work was completely normal, got weird lumps (looked like MBD in places, but wasn't), and had bones dissappear.

We worked with vets all over the country and some on the other side of the world, but no one could find anything to match her symptoms or even come up with a possible explanation.

Anyway, if this sounds familiar, let me know. I wish you luck!

Wendy
