Somethin' cool I plan on doing

loconorc Jun 09, 2007 10:07 AM

I'm sure most of yall monitor big dogs know about Megalania prisca, am I right? For you who dont, it was the largest lizard ever to have existed. It lived in Pleistocene (sp?) Australia around the time the first Aboriginal people migrated to Australia. It is recorded in many myths and is called Bungarra by locals. In a similar fashion to Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster, some beleive it to still exist. (cryptozoology for those who dont know) There have been mutliple sightings, footprints, etc. Of course, it its pretty gosh darned unlikely it still exists, but everyone would love to think otherwise.

Now about what I plan on doing. I was assigned an essay back in 7th grade history to write a scary story for halloween. Our teacher was a bigfoot and ghost fanatic and told us scary stories every Friday and wanted to hear our own. I wrote about a man lost in the Australian outback, attacked by a megalania, etc etc. Now a freshman (schools out in a week!) with an AMAZING english teacher, I plan on rewriting it with my newfound writing skills. All of my essays in her class have received extra credit, a hard thing to get in good 'ol Ms. Rice's class. This summer she wants us all to practice writing and whatnot, so I intend to do so.

Rambling done. I posted here 'cause I'm sure yall would love to read the story, and you wont be dissapointed. Should be done by the end of June. I will post it here in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG forum post when it is done. It will also be posted at cryptozoology.com (I have the same name there if you wanna find me). Wish me luck!

Ryan

First it was not the largest lizard. It may have been the last large monitor to become extint. There is no proof that it exsisted at the time of man in the australian continent.

Also bungarra is not a specific word for Mag. Its a local word for monitor type lizards. But there are also more specific words for types of montior lizards. These words are specific to each tribe.

Once for fun, I took on the person called Jamboge Shambowa, an arrawante tribe member, from the areas north of the springs called alice. I posted here and told the story of me wandering in the bush. I used arrawante words(I have a book of those words) I told of the perente and the bungarra in the dunes off the tamiami trail. I told of of sleeping under the paperbark trees by the river that goes thru Alice. I told of that river flooding(I have been there three times when that river flooded, that makes me a native)

I told of all this partly in the native tougue of the arrawente. You should try that. Cheers

Frank, I thought you would think it was cool that I was writing this, I guess not... By the way, I read (most of, not done yet) the Megalania book by Ralph Molnar, its pretty extensive, so I thought I would know a fair amount about Megalania now. I know you would still know 10 times as much, but cut me a little slack. Nothing much else pertaining to monitors is posted here other than care, I rarely see fun photos or jokes or anything else. Just tryin' to add a little fun.

where did I say it was not cool? I just shared a story. And suggested a view you could take if you wanted, or not. Cheers

Hey!
I think you misunderstood what Frank was saying. In fact, I interpreted what he said as saying, "Cool!" to your plans/story. Plus, he gave you a tip trying to help you broaden your scope.

I'm not familiar with the legend or whatever its considered so I wanted to look into it before I replied to your post. After reading what Frank wrote about it, I'm more interested and would like to read it when you get done.

Have a good one!

Youre right, dudes. Im sorry, I really did misunderstand you, Frank. I went back and read it and I was like "Ooooooooooooh" I'm just really stressed and tired and I can't really do anything right this weekend. Also, right after I made the first post, I decided to make another with more in-depth info from the book and other links, but when I was finished I pressed backspace by accident and it went back to the forum.... -_- Again, sorry I misunderstood you, and I look forward to your responses, along with HH, jobi, robyn and all you big dogs.

HH, what happened to that rude replies thread? We had a nice discussion goin'.

We are not big dogs, we are just dogs, same as anyother dog. This forum would run alot smoother if folks would not think that because a person happens to be good with reptiles, that makes them a big dog or a better person. It doesn't. Just another OLD reptile sicko. Cheers

Honestly, I'm not worthy to be lumped with the members you mentioned and the other qualified, worthy ones here. In the context of "dogs," my monitor knowledge makes me the runt puppy here in this forum. My experience is in snakes, and in general, just about any other animal. I've only been on the lizard scene for 1yr. When/if you see me posting pics of my own clutches and then hatchlings, then, maybe then, I'll be a step closer.

The only thing I have going for me is what I feel is my ability to observe, read, interpret, an animal's behavior/actions. Many a scientist can & do observe, but fail to see. Not all, but many, I feel. Actually, many a keeper does the same thing.

But anyhow, this ain't about me, it's about monitors. And this thread is about your upcoming story. Put your heart in it. Do it with pride.

As for the "rude replies" thread, heck if I know what happened to it. Maybe someone was rude. Ha! Nah, I imagine that a moderator or two felt it could've been somewhat offensive to newcomers. With the use of "newbies" & "newcomers" I can only assume they felt that some newcomers take "newbie" offensively, even though its not a derogatory word.

I think its a real shame the thread's gone. I felt it gave valuable insight of both views, letting everyone know where the other was coming from. Oh, well.

Catch ya late, sport!
