Heat rope failure

dougle Jun 09, 2007 02:24 PM

Hello everyone I had a heat rope fail on me a few days ago in my vision rack and man am I pissed , I have learned a valuable lesson always buy backup equipment , I cannot find heat rope at all in my area when I go to the hardware stores the and the big box ones I found out that none carry it , so I had to order it online. I am now using a space heater plugged to a thermosat to heat my whole snake room, I only have one vision rack at the present time thank god it is later in the spring and my basement where I my snake room is has a average temp of about 70 degrees I will warm the whole roomto about 85 degrees till my snake rack gets here. Has anyone else had this problem with heat rope ? I actually thought it was the thermostat at first and I went and purchased one at petsmart and I plugged the heat rope into it and it still did not work so it must be the heat rope I will now purchase a helix thermostat or one of the better brands for now on but it was not the thermosat I do know that, I didnt realize it was so hard to find heat rope.

One thing to be careful of is to 'not' pinch the heat cord between anything because that can cause some failure. If your rack has wheels and you run over the cord with a wheel it might cause a problem...

I had the same problem but in feb when it was cold. I was out looking for heat cables like a chicken without a head and could not find any so i had to order them from vison(I orderd two extras just incase), so i feel your pain.Look on the bright side at least this won't happen to you again!!! Good luck!

I was lucky enough that this happened right now when its warm , my animals are fine I am using a space heater until I get extra ones ordered, I had to borrow the space heater from my mom.

Here is my fave item:

BAH-1000 Thermostat (1000 Watt Triple Plug-In)

IMO, it is way way better than a regular rheostat which only lets you choose hig/med/low.

I use this t-stat w/ all my heat cable now & love it & feel very secure with it. You set it to the exact temp.

See it at Big Apple Herp website. It has 3 plugs, which is 1 more than a rheostat.
