R.I.P. Charlie

captotterboy Jun 09, 2007 09:29 PM

It happened all of a sudden. His prolapse was doing better. his eyes were open and alert. He was energetic and had his appetite back. Than a few days ago everything went downhill. His energy level went down, the prolapse got suddenly worse, and his eyes wouldn't open. Early this evening, i think shorty before his lights went out, he died.

Charlie is survived by his housemates: Queen bouddicca the kingsnake, Sister Surprise the gecko, Splat and Impulse the Red Eye tree frogs, Me and my fience.

He was my first Chameleon but wont be my last. Im just sorry i couldnt do more for him

Such a shame, feels terrible when you lose them. Makes you just want to have all the knowledge there is to see if we can do this better, and keep these guys with us longer.

Hope you feel better soon.

I agree, and i think i figured out what went wrong. Charlie hated water. One of the only times he would hiss at me was when i would mist his cage, even if the water was warm enough. I tried the shower think when he first started to get eye problems, and that seemed to help, but it stressed him out really badly. I tried misting around him this last week instead of putting him in the shower and i just think that wasnt enough hydration for him and he had dehydration complications. sigh. It hurts more when you know it was your fault.....

Thank you

I'm sorry for your loss. Its not easy losing a pet.

I don't recall reading about the prolapse and what happened after it. Was he taken to the vet? What happened with it? I know this is a difficult time to ask these questions...but if you are going to get another one, it would be good to know what went wrong with this one to prevent it in the next one.

Again...so sorry about Charlie.

I got some advice from one hobbyist to try soaking the vent in sugar water. When that didnt help i tried to step up swabbing the area with a anti-biotic ointment. It seemed to help, and the swelling was going down consistently and the prolapse colors went from an angry infectious red to more healthy colors. But that everything went bad again. I think the prolapse was caused by dehydration complications given Charlie's aversion to water.

Gee, I just stopped by to see the old gang and find this sad news. I am so sorry for you - I remember when you got him. We all know how much you cared for him, enjoy your other companions and in time you'll likely get another. I got Cyrus 8 months after Luna passed and only because he was offered to me, I wasn't sure if I was really looking or not.

Thinking of you,
lele and gang

Thanks Lele, i appreciate it. I am away on vacation and it is weird not having to worry about Charlie at home.... strange.
My brother and i are starting a leopard gecko company and were thinking about getting int chams as well. We'll see how it turns out.

Thanks
Jeff
