FYI LE Last night

Saddleman Jun 10, 2007 05:34 PM

We were stopped last night by the local sherrif deputy and told that I had too many lights on. My dim lights and 2 fog lights (factory) that come on with my dims and Melissa and I each had a spot light. Apparently Tx law says you can have 2 fog lights with your dims and 2 driving lights with your brights, a total of 4 lights on at one time and this guy considered spotlights to be part of the total. He was very nice and just told me to turn something off. I turned my fogs off. He also asked to see my hunting license which is unusual since he has stopped us every year and never asked to see them before.

Hi Rick,
I've never heared of anyone other than a game officer asking to see your hunting license. Seems a bit odd. Has this happened to you before?

asked to see the hunting license of the driver of the car we were in.

A couple of years ago the deputy in Terlingua (Brewster Co) asked to see my license and the next night, the Game Warden stopped me and did not. He said I assume you have your license or you would not be out here. I wondered if the deputy had told the warden who he had stopped and who had a license and who did not.

I have been stopped several times by sheriffs about the 6 lights burning thing, but I had two pairs of fog lights on with my headlights. I was also asked to turn on set off.

I have had the Sheriff/Constable check my hunting license near Van Horn about 2am one night. No big deal. He just ran my DL and asked to see the hunting license while we were waiting (20 frickin' minutes!!!) for the dispatcher to respond with all clear on my DL. He was very apologetic for the delay.

Although you seem to get stopped more frequently by border patrol than any other, I have never in all my years of coming to the trans-pecos been asked to show my hunting license to the local sheriff or DPS. Even once when a sherrif caught my wife spotlighting as he drove up on us one night on 277. They have always been pleasant and have never once given me a hard time. Except maybe the one time that Andrew Godambe and I were stopped at gunpoint on hwy 385 just north of fm 2627 by a few DEA agents in the summer of 2000. Although they didn't ask for our licenses either they we sure had a hard time convincing them we were only out looking for snakes. That was an interesting situation.

you should have done river road in the late 70's, early 80's. I had two DEA agents jump out in front of me with weapons pointed. The idiots had no identifying marks and were wearing dark clothing - one of them had on a mickey mnoust T-shirt. I don't know about you but my first impulse in such a situation is to floor it and run them down.
