Old age and fertility question

wolsniw Jun 10, 2007 06:09 PM

Hi, I was wondering I anyone has had success in getting having a male sire a fertile clutch when older than 13-14 years old. I ask because I have a male (never bred before) that was born in 1994 and have a five year old female that I was hoping to breed this upcoming season. I would really like to breed them but I do not want to put the female through an infertile cluch if the male may be sterile. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Winslow

Hi,

The Lemon Tree Founder Male is a 92 animal that sired a clutch this year. (I believe males are fertile right up until they drop dead off the perch .....) The LTFM is going at it right now with another girl a little less than half his age. Another male, Mister Blue, sired a clutch with a 5 year old female. MB is in his twelfth year.

I wouldn't worry about the age of your male, if I were you.

Good luck with it.

Just exactly the way it's supposed to be....I hope. If there is a better way to go out, I don't want to know about it....
