A cause for death?

missmonitor Jun 10, 2007 07:17 PM

Hi... my cuz told me (I am in no way shape or form cameleon smart. The basics... if that.) that a cameleon looses the will to live if it doesn't breed. I had serious doubts once the words came out of his mouth. But he is older with longer keeping experience and has had a cameleon before. So I thought I would ask the pros.
Thanks.

Im not an expert, but that sounds a little strange to me. So when an expert does respond, could they also answer another Cham rumor i heard that a Chameleon will die of boredom if not stimulated.

I think he or she is referring to humans, not chameleons LOL....

You're probably hearing a version of the old rumor that females need to breed, which has been proven wrong.

Just curious. What was done to disproove it?

Nothing was really done specifically to disprove that, but if you read most of the books available on the market (books written more than 4-5 years ago), they mostly say that a female veiled must breed before a certain age or that she was basically destined to die (that is a pretty major factor of bad informaiton still being passed around reguarding the subject)... I'm not sure why so many people regurged the same bad info, but it's simply not true. I know of several people (myself included) that have raised female veileds 2-3-4 years or more without ever having a male around.

I have kept/bred/raised/hatched veiled chameleons for many years now. I have had many females live to be six years old and even older that have never been bred or even laid a single egg. I lost one last week that was 6 years old and was never mated. I have another that is still with me that is over 6 and one that is 4 .

I certainly wish that old "story" about veiled females needing to be bred as soon as they reached sexual maturity would go the way of the dodo bird. Its just not true.

here is a pic of Gaia's Daughter from BlueBeast...

Her name is Rana and she is 2.5 years old and has never been bred or had an infertle clutch.... She gets the blues every six months or so, and I just cut way back on feeding an watering and they pass without any issue....
