nelsoni feeding issue

baldy5000 Jun 10, 2007 08:54 PM

Just got a male albino nelsons, 2.5 years old. Tried to feed him tonight, he began to eat the thawed fuzzy, got mouses whole head in then stopped. Thought it might be too big (although didnt really think so). Put another one in and the same thing. He seems like he wants to eat it, took some chomps, but then kind of gave up. Should I leave it in overnight? Is this a common issue? Guy I bought from said he was feeding him frozen/thawed. Any ideas?

Thanks

I would suggest you leave the prey item in over night. Some animals can can be shy and feel more comfortable when feeding in the dark. Try that and see what happens. Good luck.

yeah, left the mouse in overnight, no luck. Got home tonight and offered a little smaller one and he chowed it down. thawing another one now to see if he'd like dessert. I also just got 1.2 cb06 thayeri- female is a milksnake phase and 2 leonis males, one a bit more leonis than the other. they took 2 pinkies each no prob on sunday. It's very fulfilling having them eat. Only thing though, I miss the constriction routine of the live food. I had an eastern mnilk back in high school, and i love watching those coils wrap so fast and efficient. just have the female nelsons to feed, she has been in blue, but eyes cleared today, so hopefully some skin for the compost pile tomorow!

Peace

Try a FT pinky, in fact try three. I have found that when milk snakes are eating well (april- may and part of june) they may eat several pinks at a time then in june or july they stop eating or eat much less. So when they are eating in the spring feed them well.

My nelsoni Inez has also partially swallowed then spit back out mice that apparently were too big, but gone on to eat the next size smaller right away. I think kings and especially milks aren't able to eat the size prey that you would give a similar sized corn- their heads are just smaller. I often give her multiple prey items that add up to what would be an apropriate-sized single item.
