Panacur C for my GTP??

BryanD Jun 10, 2007 09:17 PM

Just got a wc gtp and wanted to administer panacur. The only kind I could find to buy was panacur-c, for dogs.... does anyone know if that matters or not?

It might be a different percentage of panacur per dose, so I don't know if it would be suitable. There are some people on her who know dosages so you might want to wait and get their answer or post this over on the MVF forums if you haven't already.

Panacur is Panacur - but you'll probbaly find that the C stands for - I forget the name - ubt another type of wormer often included with the dog products. The other issue is that you'll never be bale to get 100 mg/kg out of a dog bottl - it'd be like a tiny fraction of a drop as the proper dose.

If you are treting for parasteis prophalactically thouhg don't use something narrow like panacur, use flagyl. If the animal is eating use a loaded prey item. You may find this helpful:

Honestly, I assumed that the "c" in Panacur C stood for canine, it was on 1800petmeds and seemed to be marketed to dog owners. That said, does it matter? Is it just marketing?

Ross, I read your article and I was very impressed with your candor and the generous manner with which you shared your experiences and insight. My intention was to take a very very small piece of a 1 gram pill and administer via rodent then repeat every two weeks for 3-4 dosages (assuming no ill effects were observed). Admittedly, that is not the most scientific approach but it doesn't seem overly reckless if done cautiously. I'd love to get my hands on some flagyl, any suggestions where I can find some online?? The snake also has a small number of mites in the periocular tissue and I have some Porvent-a-mite on it's way to me (overnight shipping). Mites are no problem, I've tackled them before, and yes provent-amite is great.

I'm really not being cheap or lazy, my local vets just suck, even the small animal ones, and I'm trying to acclimate this animal the best way possible.

Thanks for the advice.

Bryan,

Thnaks for the kind words, happy to help.

Lots of vets are not good with exotics, don't worry about that. What you might consider though is that as depressing as it may be to deal with folks who are doing the best they can and perhaps should't be is to not give up, it is likely a decent exotics vet does exist near you or soon will, where do you live? Most of the young vets know their stuff pretty good and there are associations and such to guyide you to a decent vet.

The C may stand for canine but I know panacur for dogs is often combined with another deworming agent, the label will tell you this.

To provide any anti-parasite medication you must have a scale, a simple kitchen scale from the grocery store will do but you must must weigh the snake. Once you've done that you need to read the label to figure out how many mg of medicine is in each gram, I have some horse panacur that is 100 mg per gram and is a 25 gram tube, so the tube has 2500 mg of medicine in it. If the snake weighed say 650 grams (and this is why it is so important to weigh, a guess here is the worst) and you wanted to admin at a preventatvie rate of 100 mg/kg - your snake weighs 0.65 kg, so you'd want to provide 65 grams of medicine - or 2.6% of that tube or .65 grams.....next to impossible, you need panacur at a lower concentration to use it.

Glad to hear you have provent-a-mit ont he way, follow the lable they mena that bit about the water and completely dry.

Flagyl = Metronidazole and there are lots of sources to buy it online, lambriarvetsupply.com is one of my favorites.

Look - I know how muhc a lousy vet sucks but I wouldn't admin meds with a vet consult and I've been doing this for more than 20 years and spent a year or so as a vet tech when I was a kid. Acclimation of GTP's is really difficult - you may fidn this useful/interesting:

Ross, thanks again for the advice. It's becoming clear to me that properly treating for parasites is really not an optional event with this species. As it turns out, someone I work with also owns chondros and I'm getting the information for thier local vet. He's halfway across the state but I'm going to make an appointment as soon as I can.
