Double clutch question....

wisema2297 Jun 10, 2007 10:07 PM

My hypo miami laid on May 7. I feed her as much as she would eat to build up her weight again. Now she is refusing and appears to be gravid again. How long usually before they become gravid a second time. I have not introduced any males since she laid because she seemed so skinny. I am just a little concerend since she lost a lot of weight with her first clutch. She is such a good looking hypo and I want her to be around for many more years.

I had the same problem last year. A female I was concerned about decided on her own to double clutch. They were all duds, as well.
i was told feeding them little after the first lay would make them not want to double. It did not work on my girl. I have no idea how to prevent them from double clutching. I think the second clutch is about a month (4-6 weeks) after the first. It just depends if the female stored sperm, when she "processes" it.
thats my opinion. I am sure others will have more.

Thanks Misty. I has been a little over 4 weeks so that puts right at the time she would begin to show again. I would expect mostly slugs since she had a small clutch the first time (11) with three going bad and 2 more are ify now.

Ive always been told and HAVE experienced that most will double clutch on their own anyway so ya might as well put them with a male. Ive tried 2 years in a row, on certain females, not to double clutch and they have always laid a 2nd set anyway. Just my experience.....but Im far from an expert!!!

60 days for eggs to be laid
60 days for eggs to hatch
so second batch is laid around time of first hatching........

......my one amel laid at 50 days just to prove this all wrong..........never happens....usually at least 56 days or so......

........some species is quicker.......tri-color hogs laid every 30 days or so.,.........I guess duds make it easier to create too........LOL........

some of my girls didn't double this year.......some did.......some laid good seconds .one was 19 eggs......wow.....never happens that good..and all good eggs...........then there is the 6 little duds and 8 little duds from big girls.....that were actually bred for a second batch.......

come to think of it, the first clutch is hatching when the second one is due.
I have just had 3 early clutches this year.
