Indoor - outdoor cage system update

Sighthunter Jun 10, 2007 10:34 PM

It has been a few months now and I have not had any bad experiences with this system. The foam plug has been working in a flawless manner keeping the heat or cold outside. The snakes that I have set up in them are Unicolor Cribo and Pseustes. The imports take about two weeks to get used to coming in and the captive hatched seem to be naturals. The snakes that have used the system to date are the Blacktail Cribo’s, Unicolor Cribos, Pseustes and Coachwhip. The winter will bring new challenges but all the snakes have learned to come in out of the heat even my tree dwelling Pseustes. Here are two pictures of the finished caging

That is very cool!
such active snakes deserve the ability to thermoregulate, search, and be exposed to sun and rain at will.....
I would have to believe your breeding success should increase.

Well done! Have you noticed any change in the snakes coloration due to the exposure to natural sunlight?

The changes I have noticed is that the coach whip is brighter pink. The Unicolor Cribos and the Blacktail Cribos are Yellower and the ventral surface has changed from white to yellow. The snakes are also more animated. They might retreat outside after feeding or come inside when they know I am in the room to see if I brought food. They also have an increased apatite. The Cribos will also maintain a higher body temp and will bask till 90F or so mostly after a feeding. They are different animals and the feeding responses are scary. They shoot out of the cage faster and farther. They also eat every couple of days instead if twice a week. They are also growing quite a bit faster.Yellowtail Cribo will thrive in this setup.

Inspiring set up. I was wondering if any of the snakes have potty trained themselves to go outside? Or inside, I guess, but don’t most seem to pick a preferred spot? Sure would love to set something like that up with a typical dog kennel type run outdoors. I really appreciate you following up with your post.

Yes this shot shows feces outside. I have found one drawback and that is only one snake at a time. If a snake is coiled up in the tube one gets locked out or in so a second tube for multiple snakes is smart.
