Breding timing question.....

rainbowsrus Jun 11, 2007 11:33 AM

OK, got most of the timing down from reading all the posts and brushing up info available through websites etc. Yeah, got the whole POS plus 105 days thing.

My question is, at what point does the male lose interest?

Before or after pre ovulatipon swell?
Before or after ovulation?
Before or after post ovulation shed?

I had a few pairs courting heavily but I never caught a pre ovulation swell or an ovulation so not sure which shed would be the POS. Wondering if loss of interest in male could help define the timeline.

The answer to everything you have asked is yes. Boas are ever changing and ever confusing and ever unpredictable creatures. That's the beauty of them.

In my experience the male will almost never lose interest during preov swell, but will almost always lose interest right before ovulation, that being said I have some males that will court females about to drop. I would say look at your records look for a shed about a month after he lost interest, if no shed count about 4 mos. after he lost interest. Again every case is different. CRaig

I would not place much emphasis on when the male loses interest as this is very unpredictable as others have pointed out. When we followed a bunch of my boas with ultrasound, the most surprising observation was that the breedings we observed took place 30-45 days before the females ovulated, usually when the follicles were still very small. After mating, the follicles grew quickly to 40-45 mm then ovulation occured soon there after. I have since felt it was more important to make sure males were placed with females well in advance of their pre-ovulation swell.
