Cataracts?

ligne6 Jun 11, 2007 09:42 PM

My female Western hognose is almost 13 years old. After she shed this last time, I noticed that one of her eyes is cloudy around the pupil. I thought these snakes lived to be 20 so I'm not thinking it's an age thing. Could it be cataracts? Thanks for any info you can share.

I have actually heard of it and I have seen pics of it. It was a southern hog but I assume they all could get this.

I have seen cataracts in older snakes, but 13 seems a bit young to me. Are you sure it isn't an unshed eyecap?

Thanks - that was my first thought too but I checked and both caps came off.She just ate four mice though so I guess this is not going to handicap her.

It could also be the beginning of a bacterial infection in the eye. You might want to have a vet look at her just to be safe.
