male dragon is being bad

grouchyrocker87 Aug 16, 2003 10:07 PM

My male red/gold dragon has decided in the last month or so not to eat anything but waxworms(and those he will only eat 2-3 every few days). I thought he was just becoming spoiled, so I didn't feed him anything but greens(which he won't touch) for a week and he still wont eat a superworm or greens! The problem isn't worms because he was dewormed twice last month! I have offered him everything I can think of: superworms, 3 brands of pellets, mealworms, crickets, greens, strawberries, carrots. Oh, besides the waxworms he did decide to take a lick of the strawberry yogurt I had last week. I'm not thinking hes impacted because he has pooped and the only substrate he has is paper towels. I wasn't worrying until just now when I realised how long it has been for him to have a proper meal! He still has a plump tail and hes not brumating because he is basking. The basking temps are ok. The only other thing I can think of doing is force-feeding(which I dont want to do because of the stress)! He is also pretty small for being just over a year old at 16 inches. He got separated from his girlfriend a few weeks ago too because I thought maybe she was beating him up for food but this turns out not to be the case. Between him and the 13 new-born beardies I am pulling my hair out!

He's on a Diet perhaps?

if his fat pads are full (behind eyes) and he is other wize fat and active he may just not need to eat right now....

and he *MIGHT* be trying to go for a rest --- try giving him a cool dark spot to hide in and see if he goes for it...

I have heard some will go down at odd times when something triggers them....
