Alabama - Black with 1 row of diamonds

schart Jun 12, 2007 08:01 AM

I was cleaning out my yard this past weekend. I was in a corner cutting away at vines, raking old leaves, etc. When I was leaning down cutting some vines I noticed a black snake lying still. He was approx 1-/2 to 2" in diameter. He was solid black with 1 row of white or gray diamonds (about 1" long 1-/2" wide) down the center of his back. He was real calm and did not try to strike. I need to know what kind of snake this is so I know how to handle it.
I appreciate your help!!

It is going to be hard to identify your snake based on that description since everyone's idea of diamonds on a snake is slightly different.

You might try searching online for pictures of alabama snakes and see if you can identify it. Here's one site with some photos -

Since Alabama is a reasonably small state (E-W), you might be able to find photos of GA or MS snakes that show species that occur in your region of AL as well.

My guess is a Black Ratsnake or Gray Ratsnake. They intergrade in AL and you would find snakes with intermediate characteristics.
