changing size and quantity of crickets?

at the end of the month our chameleon will be 5 months and i was planning on changing the size and quantity of the crickets i've been feeding him to large and less. currently i feed him 8-10 a day and plan on going to 5 to 6 a day of the larger crickets. today though we bought 500 2 week old crickets. could i mantain the quantity i am feeding him now using the smaller crickets without "power feeding" for growth until the crickets get bigger?
i don't want to do anything to promote MBD.
