My awesome weekend! (WAY O/T and DUW)

waspinator421 Jun 12, 2007 05:31 PM

So I flew home to MN this weekend to visit my family. Relatives from Arizona were in town so I wanted to visit before they left. I had a great time, and took lots of pictures.

Sorry Renee, but I didn't have time to meet up with you in the cities, otherwise I would have e-mailed you.

I took off bright and early Friday morning at 5:30 A.M. in a Piper Arrow. The weather was beautiful, and there was a nice cloud layer that I flew over.

Here is the Mississippi River coming up on the left.

When I was over the cloud layer I saw a peculiar natural phenomenon. There was a rainbow circle on the clouds. At first I though it might've been light coming through my windows, but it didn't move with me. It was really neat, and I've never seen anything like it before. I tried to get a picture, but it's a little hard to see.

We went to a party at my folks' friends farm and had a good time there. We went back the next day to ride their horses. Mine bucked me a little, lol!

They also had 8 tiny kittens running around in there garage. They were SOO cute! I fell in love with one... and... just had to take him home!! I named him Sam. My mom is holding him in the first picture.

My mom lives out in the country and I got to see humming birds and other neat animals. One night there were some tree frogs outside. Does anyone know what kind they are? I have no idea.

We also found this really neat looking caterpillar. I haven't seen this kind before, but found out that it is a Mourning Cloak.

The flight back was also very nice. I was popping in and out of clouds a good chunk of the way, and little Sam slept most of the time. He didn't wake up until I landed. Right after the 'bump' of touching down I heard, "MEW, MEW, MEW"... SOOO cute!!

I wasn't able to keep up with this forum since I've been gone.... there have been SOO many posts!!

Anyway, that was my weekend. Little Sam has been having so much fun here at his new place.... loves to play and sleep.

Hope you enjoyed my little story and the pictures.

Awww... you allergic to kitties? That's too bad.

Thanks for the compliment, though! Yeah, I know what you mean with flying over clouds. On a flight several months ago a cloud layer formed below me and then slowly creeped up to my altitude. It was so neat when I was right on top of it. I could really see my speed being right on top. It kind of felt like I was a boat on water... but in the air! After a few minutes of skimming the surface the clouds swallowed me up and I was in the soup. That is a moment I will never forget.

Absolutely love that feeling!! I have started to take pics from planes before.. some incredable sunrises and sunsets.. but alas.. I only have one shot from a plane that I can think of..

I will share it though
It was a really hazy day.. But have you ever looked down at Mt Fuji? It was sort of creepy.. the last time I was over there.. steam and ash was coming out of the top.. erie..

Next time you get a BRB (or three), why don't you just come and get it? I'll come and get you at the airport and give you the grand tour!!

Dave, that would be so much fun! Unfortunately plane rental prices are very expensive... more so than flying airline. If I got some extra cash to blow, I would LOVE to fly to California!! Thanks for the invite!

Frank.... thanks for identifying the frog. Yes, they were in MN. Is the solid green one also the same kind?

they change colors from green to grey, sometimes almost white as well, this was the first frog I ever kept as a kid, had the darn thing 8 years. Now since copes southern gray is endangered, all versicolor are prohibited in NJ, because the state can not tell the two species apart ( call & chromosomes are the only way) they made all illegal to possess.

very cool pics!

I saw the same type of rainbow on clouds last sunday but instead of a ring or crescent if was in a straight line. A friend of mine there dook some pics with his digital camera so as soon as he emails em to me I'll post em and you can compare to what you saw.

Sean.

A while back there was a light haze (enough that you could look at the sun) and the sun had a circle rainbow around it, unfortunately no camera handy.

Thanks Sean! I would like to see those pictures... can't say I've ever seen them in a straight line.
