APLAXAR Jun 12, 2007 06:11 PM

Hey All, i dont keep beardeds, but at th store i work at we carry Silkworms among other interesting worm choices for herps. Today i had a women tell me that silkworms are horrible and have been killing beardeds across the country, i personally have never heard this i think silk worms are great.

Has anyone else heard/experienced it? i wasnt sure if she was just putting her opinion/misinformation out there. any info is greatly appreciated

She doesn't know what she is talking about. Have been using silkworms as a staple for a while now. Great feeder.

I'd be real surprised if anyone here comes up with a negative opinion on silkworms. I've been on this board for a while and have never heard any negatives except that some people find them fragile.

Yeah, i feed them to my frogs all the time and they go nuts for them, i cant say a bad thing about big worms that have a great amount of protien, i just like to check on things i have never heard before, so i figuered this would be a great place to do it

Never heard of any reptile being killed by a silkworm. So that lady had no clue what she was saying.

Only thing I could come up with to explain where she came up with the ideal dragons were dying across the country because of silkworms is she mistook the information about silkworms dying across the country due to a virus/bacteria that was attacking the silkworms. hence why many silkworm suppliers have been having a hard time keeping silkworms in stock, the worms won't mature, dying before they could pupate. But that problem seems to have worked itself out, as last I heard, silkworms are pupating fine for the last month or so.

Silkworms with the virus eaten by dragons had no affect, or never heard of any problems in other species consuming silkworms.
