funky looking eggs

KTR Jun 13, 2007 02:49 AM

I've been lurking here for the past few years and I've noticed everyone's eggs are always smooth looking even if they are dehydrated or dented. My first clutch looked great when the eggs were laid but now the eggs are all bumpy they kind of look like they have blisters. My incubator temp is at 87.8 and my hygrometer will read up to 90% after that it just shows a line. So far my humidity has always been above 90%. I was using hatchrite but switched to vermiculite the other day because of the bumpy looking eggs I was getting. I've only opened the incubator 3 times. Just once a week since they were laid.

what is wrong with my eggs?

My clutch this season looks the same and also candle well. I was just going to post and see if anyone knew what caused it. Here is a close up of mine.

By the way, mine was a 100% het Pied to normal, what was yours?

I was wondering what causes it also. Mine are 100%het pied to 50% het for pied. And the perfect looking ones same male but to a normal female.

I have a burgundy looking female that threw a clutch like that in 05.(To me they look like the shells were just double thick in some places)....they all hatched.

Was your female an older animal,by any chance?
(I was thinking it was the reason mine looked that way anyway.)

Mine is only three and this was her first clutch.

Do you think the shells are twice as thick in some places, or, was she unable to fully calcify them and they are actually less thick in the other spots?

Like her body couldnt provide enough calcium to fully shell the egg, so it's kind of blotchy in places?

Just a thought?

I had a famale last year that was 1400grams, but kinda skinny for her length that threw a clutch like this.

Was your girl hefty or skinny for her length?

I gave the girl who laid the bumpy eggs this year off to try and get her a little heavier, shes 1800 grams, give or take currently.

I was thinking about possibly putting some calcium powder on her rats for the month or two leading up to next years breeding season, but that was just a thought.

Mine was 1700 grams but long and skinny, Her eggs that look like this two of them have windows, small ones but to me they look thin in spots. The other female that laid the perfect eggs was 1870 but a little shorter so she looks thicker.

Do you think adding calcium to her diet might help her to shell her eggs correctly the next time?

I was going to try with my girl. Only a light dusting on her food for the last month or two before I cycle her this fall.

Just an idea?

I do not know. I would be interested to see if that changes things. I guess as long as you do not give to much calcium it can not hurt.My very first ball had a broken spine and I was told to put calcium on the tail of the feed, to try and help his back, I did it for over a year, his back is a mess, from the break down he is kinked and as he gets bigger the kinking gets worse, he has no muscle strength from the break down, But he moves good, eats good, and can go to the bathroom so who knows.

The eggs were nice, smooth, and normal looking when they were laid. It wasn't until after they were put in the incubator that they began looking like this.

The snake that laid these eggs is about four years old and weighed about 1700 grams when she became gravid.

She was bred to a Lemon Pastel.

I'm wondering if it is possible that the eggs were exposed to too much humidity causing some sort of blister on the shells. The bumps are hard to the touch but that is the only thing I can think that would cause this. But if you all say that they are fine I'll take your word for it. Thank you for the quick replies.
