Controling Flies and Gnats

Camby Jun 13, 2007 08:16 AM

I posted this in the corn forum as a response and thought maybe a few of you might want to here it...

About 4-5 years ago, I had a terrible break out of the little fecal flies/knats and obviously hated them. A friend of mine owns a Feed and Seed store so I asked him if he had any thing to stop knats and flies and he recommended "Golden Malyrin" (I think spelling is ok.

It is in a blue crystal form and comes in a tin can with red and yellow on the lable. I pour a small amount into a container and place it in the snake and rodent rooms and with the product and regular cage cleaning, I rarely have any house flies or other flies or knats. It has a very strong odor when first placed out, but this quickly disapates. My snake room is small, only 8 x 10 and I use about 4-5 table spoon fulls and replace it every 3-4 weeks.

BTW, we place a conatiner in non conspicuous locations on the front and back porches of our house and it drastically reduces the number of flies in these areas during the summer. It really works for me and hope this helps anyone who trys it.

thanks< i might try that. I have some gnats because of my dart frog tank and lots of houseplants. They aren't too bad yet but it's just starting to get warm.

I would be cautious utilizing it around frogs. It is a poison and if it is possible for the flies to gain access to the frog enclosure and become food, then that might be a bad problem. I am not sure because I don't know if the poison would affect the frogs, you might want to research it before using.

"Golden Malrin" you were close but the search engines couldent find it by the name you gave. I finally found it doing searches for fly control and golden.

Gonna order some now to try outdoors as the flies this time of year tear up my dogs ears.

Thanks for the post.

Sean.

Daryl,
nice to see you on the forum. Thanks for the tip. I had the same problem two years ago. Once it started I had no solution other than twice a day maintenance and cold weather to kill the remaining bugs off. I will look that up for a local dealer in case of a repeat.

Thanks, I guess it has been a year or more since I posted. That was probably the most help I have been on here. not being around to offer advice, lol

Talk to you later.

Here's info on the active ingredient, Methomyl -

It's pretty nasty stuff.
