baby ripping off tail?

fattiesnleos Jun 13, 2007 02:58 PM

okay so anyways this may sound strange. this is my first year breeding fattails and people say they are a little harder and that seems to hold true so far. well we left on monday to go to anza borrego dessert in search of the san diego banded gecko and when we left one of my baby albino fatties was getting ready to start her first shed (she hasnt even eaten yet). i made sure it was nice and humid b4 we left. well we spent 1 night away and got back last night. when i opened her shoe box to check on her first i saw her tail (seperated from her body, shed still on it) then i saw her with shed still pretty much stuck everywhere! she was not a very happy camper and was very stressed! i saw her turn around and bite herself! i imagine trying to get her shed off but this was like really bitting herself not the shed. i think she actually pulled her own tail off! anyhow that really sucked! i had to very gently pull almost all her shed off for her, i felt like i was doing surgery. these guys hatch out a lot smaller then leos by the way. she seemed exhausted and dehydrated so i mixed some water with calci and vitamin powder and had her drink a few drops. she seems better today. anyhow i was just wondering if anyone has ever had this happen? with leos or fatties.

This is totally off topic, and i'm sorry I can't help you with your problem, but I just had to ask.

I'm in Irvine, and I REALLY wanted to take a trip out to Anza. Did you guys by any chance stop by the falls? I don't know if they've dried up yet, and it's not worth the drive if they are.

no we didnt. everything is closed for the season out there right now. and we got there monday night, got up tuesday and aparently anything that is open year round is closed on tuesday. so it kinda sucked. we drove like 1 hour away too, to go these hot springs, we get there and it was closed! its a fricken trail in the middle of the desert and they closed it? it was retarded, but other then that the hotel we stayed at was nice, they had a nudy pool. haha but we didnt use it. but its supposed to start getting really hot there this week, like 111 or something. go on a weekend because even the visitors center was closed and is only open on weekends.

I don't know about your little baby, but we had an adult leo that we found inside her hide with half of her tail in her mouth! She ended up damaging the end (about 1/4 in.) and it fell off. They do the weirdest things sometimes and we think she was probably excited about eating, wiggled her tail, saw it and then attacked it...
Good luck with your fat-tail, lucky they grow back!
