Here's a quiz snake for you.....

chrish Jun 13, 2007 09:25 PM

OK, time for another quiz snake. I photographed this at a reptile expo. It is from the US, but what is it?

You could probably cheat but try to get it without it. I didn't guess what it was when I saw it. The snake appeared just as it looks in the photo.

If you want to guess, please don't put the answer in the subject line so others can have a chance.

Well, some sort of garter I think.

Easy one for me....wandering garter, thamnophis elegans vagrans...have had a few colored just like that, also, looks like it was a wild caught, missing part of its tail....=)

Yep, that's it. I had never seen an elegans like this. It kind of looks a little like a marcianus and a little like a cyrtopsis. Interesting snake.

Do you know where that color phase is found?

I've found them like that here in Salt Lake City!! They have a bit of variation in colors...I recently caught one similar to that with an orange belly. There is a bit of variation in colors around Utah.

They guy that had the snake didn't know where it was from. I also wondered as I hadn't seen that sort of pattern in T. elegans before.
Thanks for the info.
