ballfreak Jun 13, 2007 09:51 PM

i have a few balls in a rack system and they are all about 1000 grams. i very rarely take any of them out. should i be letting them roam around out of there tubs for some exercise? is this being cruel by never taking them out of there near perfect enviorment? no criticism please. thanks all in advance.

Yes I think you should, I have purchased three snakes that were always in tubs and they are so head shy and not used to being held at all, One has come around nicely and loves being out the other two hiss and carry on, they do not want o be held at all. Mine are in racks but I make sure that they all get out at least two times a week. Just my thoughts.

I take the ones I want to be in peak breeding condition, ie; the ones I paid alot of money for, out for exercise. The ones that are less valuble to me get less one-on-one treatment.

These are the facts for me.

This is why, I try and only keep animals I absolutely need based upon the fact that I know how much time I have for them. I get rid of the ones I know, in my heart, I will neglect.

In my opinion, they must need exercise -they must get it in the wild.

No judgement here...

Just by asking the question, it means you must care about them...

Either that, or you just care about your investment...only you truely know.

p.s. In my defense, I have other snakes that are pretty much worthless (money wise), except sentimentally to me, that get the Royal Python treatment and I will never get rid of them for anything.

I don't think that there is a clear answer to that. It all depends on the size of the tank and the size of the snake. I personally don't care much for using rack systems for adults because it reminds me of a factory farm. Instead I keep all my adults in vision cages, monster cages, and other similar brands. However, if you have a big business to run, rack systems are certainly the most efficient method (and easy to clean). Ball pythons don't really need to 'come out for exercise' as long as their cage is big enough to let them roam around and stretch out. I usually try to take friendly/active snakes out when I can, and leave the more high-strung ones alone (except for a nippy baby boa that needs to get tame before he's big enough to actually do damage!).

I take most of my snakes out weekly. The ones who enjoy getting out & about are right there to greet me & crawl out when I open the lid. If my explorers are having a bad day, I can tell & just leave them alone.

Maybe if you try & take them out once in awhile, some will like it & in the future let you know when they want to come out & play.

I have found that handling my snakes gives me a much closer/better rapport with them. But let's note: I am the stereotypical "overboard, spoil all pets type" to begin with.
