PA Snake Identification Please

jdjdjd Jun 13, 2007 10:22 PM

Hello, Can anyone ID this snake? I am located in Montgomery Co. Pennsylvania / outside of Philadelphia. It was in a small creek that goes through my backyard eating a fish. The fish measures about 7" long to give you an idea of the size of the snake. I believe the fish is a suckerfish. Do I have to worry about him biting the kids and pets?

The snake is a Northern Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon)

Do I have to worry about him biting the kids and pets?

Watersnakes will bite if handled, but they aren't likely to bite otherwise. Teach your kids not to touch wild snakes and they will be fine.

Just to make sure what Chris said is clear... They will bite, but they are NOT venomous or dangerous. They are somewhat more agressive and have longer teeth than most "harmless" snakes, so a big one may make you use foul language and bleed a little, but will do no real damage.

What goes up must come down...unless it exceeds escape velocity.

But, as Chris stated, they are not going to bite unless they are picked up, grasped, stepped on, or otherwise molested. They are not going to bite someone who is simply walking by them.
