good pets

uropat Aug 17, 2003 01:00 AM

hi, I am looking for a new kind of lizard to get and I was wondering if collard lozards are good lozards to keep as pets. I currently have 2 mali uromastyx. I was wondering if their cage requirements, food requiremants and so on are ok. I want a lizard that can be handles fairly frequently and won't bit my hand (or finger tips) off. I would appreciate any pictures of poeples animals and cages if they can post them .
Thanks,
Pat

Collared lizards are very active, making them great to watch. (unlike some geckos that just hang on the glass.) They occasionly bite if they are scared or threatened, (Or feel they are.) but they aren't big enough to cause serious injury. They are very beautiful lizards with many different colors too, so all considered, they are really good pets.

They're active, they're colorful. They can be kinda agressive at first but tame down well with regular handling. They need lots of room & eat a lot. But otherwise they make really good pets. This is a picture of my collared Squig. = )

Depending on what size of lizard you want, a bearded dragon may be the answer. They are much more receptive to handling than collared lizards - they'll sit in your hand or on your shoulder for hours. But they grow much larger than collareds, and your mali’s. Total length can get up to 2 feet and they do require large enclosures.

But if it’s a handling lizard you want, beardies are one of the best choices.

I have only had them since May, but none of the four captive bred collared lizards have ever bitten me. I even have had a hard time tapping thier mouth to get it open when I was trying to coax them to eat a superworm.

I assume this is typical of captive bred Collareds that they don't bite. Wild caught is probably an entirely different thing.

Ha. There you go! They don't know that there is anywhere else to be, so they don't bite!
