Their litters were so hit and miss for me though I got rid of them all a little over a year ago.
Besides a species with "D" name threw of my symetry of Redtails, Rainbows, Rosys and Rubber boas.

I LOVE Dumerils!!!
I almost bought one at my local herp shop but they didnt seem to nice, very very VERY dull colors. I would like to find one with some High Pinks in it!
And I remember reading in a post that Frank was constricted by a five footer, also saying how incredibly strong they are for thier size!
They are really strong animals. Fiesty too. I like that they are such a heavy bodied snake and have such a dense pattern. I really like the looks of the Madgascar ground boas too, which are simliar with stronger colors.
The only thing that burned me out with the Dum's was my very poor breeding sucess so I thought I'd let someone else give them a try. Of course I bought my group when there were still $1200 a pair so that was a bad move on my part from an investment standpoint. But who can really worry about that anyway? Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. It all comes down to how much fun who have working with the animals in the meantime. Besides it freed up much needed cage space.
A piece of information you may like to know. From personal experience and other breeders Intel it is apparent that Dumeril's do not breed "well" until they are a little older than most other boids. First litter she dropped was like 8 babies, last one was 24 ( also the most she ever had ). Oddly always more every time. Sometimes biennially instead of yearly, they have not been bred in 7 years, the only time they ever where together was that time on April 15, 2007. They are "mine" and I do not care if they ever breed to be honest. I was just fortunate to acquire them and I paid 1500 for the pair. They are like 100 bucks these days. So I didn't get them as a "project", I just had to have them!!!
They are not too old to breed either, I have read they still readily reproduce even after 20 years of age.

Well Frank, get me some pics of yours...and BREED them!!!!!!!!!!
I will most likely try next season 2007/2008. If everything is copasetic leading up to their season.
I should also be trying to breed my BRB's as well. Her weight was not satisfactory this past season, I got the pair from Jeff. Male was ready, female was close, after discussing certain criterion with Jeff / Dave I opted not to breed her because her weight was not ideal. She was just over 1000 grams which is only about 2.2 pounds.
I have bred them ( different BRB's ) in the past and I am sure the female was about 1000 grams as well, all where born alive and well, 13 babies, but the snake took a beating in the wight loss department.
So after Jeff / Dave told me minimum weight should be at least 1600 grams = 3.5 pounds. I decided it would not be a good plan to put her under undo stress. Reproductive cycles tax the animals more than a lot of people think. She is currently over the 3.5 minimum at this time and eating like a machine. Male is also a great feeder, I defrosted and warmed a rat to 105 degrees, he hit that rat so hard & so fast, I couldn't release my grip on the hemostats fast enough, resulting in a very unpleasant looking scenario. He ripped it in half and the inards wheree hanging off, he ate the entrails and all. YUMMY!!!

I bred my first pair for thier first time when they were in their sixth year and had good size on them and then agian two years later. The first year she had a whopping one baby. No slugs or stills. The next go round wasn't much better but I did still borns with the couple of live babies. After talking to a couple of breeders with experiece working with Dumerils I was led to believe that this is fairly normal for some females whereas others will produce high #'s consistently. Others might have high #'s some years and low on other years. Thats what I meant by hit and miss with their breeding attempts. Even the low litter size with mine seemed to be very taxing on the female though which is why I decided to give her a year off in between the attempts. I didn't find a whole lot of breeding info for them but try to follow the info from the "Reproductivy Husbandy of Pythons and Boas" as closely as I could. I think that is a great book and source for breeding information.

I am lucky in the fact that my female will eat during the entire gestation.

I really like Mattison's books. His "Keeping and Breeding Snakes" and "Keeping And Breeding Lizards" are classic good reptile books. Before there were so many reptile books like we have now Mattison's books were the best available sources of "modern" reptile keeping info.

I had some Dumerils quite a few years back. They are neat snakes but were taking up cage space and I did not seem to be able to get them to do anything but have recreational sex.

The pair I have has produced several litters in the past. I have not bred "any" snakes in the last 3 years. I was for lack of a better word, Dormant.
They are one of the most muscular Boids I have ever acquired, the immense feeling of holding my 7 foot female and my 5 foot male is quite INTENCE.
The pair is 15 years old, very nice animals. Nope I do not have a single picture, actually very few of my animals have ever been photographed.
After my divorce I was on a "hiatus" for quite some time. At one point having to disseminate my entire collection. Lucky for me I got some of them back when I got my self together, had to start over from scratch almost, I still get a little pissy because I had to get rid of a 23 foot burmese python, couldn't get that one back, It is in some educational center in another state according to who I offloaded it on.
But I am back in the saddle again. I am glad I got some of them back, especially the "retic's".
But I am a very happy man these days, back from the dead!
That was the day my dead pet returned to save my life.
I'm Alive!!
They did mate once on April 15, 2007...I do not think anything became of it, because they usually bred much earlier.
I put them together out of curiosity to see if they would copulate that late in the season. they locked up for several hours and after that I separated them, female is not behaving as if gravid.
The actual plan was to breed them next season, but I try to get a lot of different snakes breeding at times of the year that they most likely will not, just to studying their seasonality and or aseasonality. NERD. lol

I'm Alive (That Was The Day My Dead Pet Returned To Save My Life)
I was just kicking down the street
And the sun was in my eyes
So I couldn't see the truck
That was sixty times my size
And just seconds off from splattering me
Let me tell you
I was so scared I couldn't move
Like my boots were full of glue
Then I felt a little tug
And I thought of good Old Blue
And he pulled me from that catastrophe
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
I'm alive
He's alive
I'm alive
I was spitting in the canyon
Near the cliff up on the mountain
When an unexpected sneeze
Hung me in the breeze
At forty five degrees in the sky
Suddenly I felt something
Had me by the belt
And in between my praying
Swore I heard a stallion neighing
Was the ghost of my horse
And I cried, yes I cried
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
I'm alive
He's alive
Hey, I'm alive
Things were getting gory
Got caught on territory
Belonging to the Crutches
In an alley in their clutches
Looking kind of dismal that night
Well the leader's name was Fats
Swinging broken baseball bats
Things got really frantic
Starting jumping in their panic
Hallucinating billions of rats
Lots of rats
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
I'm alive, I'm alive, real alive
That was the day my dead pet returned
That was the day my dead pet returned
That was the day my dead pet returned
That was the day my dead pet returned
To save my life
I'm alive, I'm alive
He's alive, he's alive, he's alive
I'm alive, yeah
He's alive, he's alive
I'm alive, real alive
Alive, alive, alive
Alive, alive, alive, alive
Alive, alive, alive, alive
I'm alive
