Ok so update on my move soon....

tsusnakeguy Jun 14, 2007 08:20 PM

Ok so I have arranged it so that I can move from Alabama to Louisiana at night. I said before that they will have to go in the back of the uhaul because there is no other way I can do it. But I figured I would put the smaller snakes in small containers in a cooler. I have a few questions about that. Is it ok to leave the cooler lid closed, can they breath? Also how do I go about doing a small ice pack to make sure they dont freeze? I am going to put my big snakes in pillow cases in rubbermaids and I figure that the night time temps will not bother big boas that bad. I feel alot better about being able to travel at night.

If you have a tropical fish store near you see if you can get some of their leftover styrofoam lined shipping boxes. When I go to shows I pack the snakes in these type containers with a couple small air holes and they do great. Travelling at night and using styrofoam lined boxes you should have no problem. When traveling with snakes during hot weather I always have a bag of ice in a drink cooler ready in case of problems or delays.

Like Jeff said, pick up some fish store styrofoam cooler shipping boxes. Go to a store soon and ask, you might have to go back on a specific date. And have ice on the ready but as long as you are traveling at night without the sun shining on the uhaul, the back should NOT get any warmer then ambient temps.

First, I hope that the move goes well for you and that everyone (people included) makes it through well.

Do you have or think you can find a temp gauge with a long cord on it? Or maybe get one and cut the cord on it and splice a longer one to it (if that will work)? That way maybe you can monitor the temps on the inside of the truck without having to open the thing every hour or so.

Maybe someone already mentioned this in one of your earlier posts.
Best of luck with the whole thing
Rob

A remote sensor setup I got in a cage collection deal. Never used it, not sure exactly how it works or details about it. But as I remember, there were multiple wireless sensing units that could be placed in cages and a seperate display unit. If your interested, I can dig it out and give you details about mfg model etc.

Great thing - do you have a power converter to go from a cig lighter in the u-haul to a standard power oulet. If so, you should be able to run a standard thermostat to read temps.

The other thing is insulation! Besides styrofoam boxes wrap them in blankets, and other things like that will help regulate temps.

I would keep them a bit off the floor - with something decent to insulate heat coming from the floor.
