Beardie who doesn't like greens

Adventurecycling Jun 15, 2007 10:37 AM

Anyone have this problem with a beardie not eating veggies? The one I have is about a year old, eats crickets with no problem and will eat hibiscus flowers. However, he won't touch greens.

Do I quit giving him crickets and only greens?

Thanks

No I wouldn't.

Try mustard greens and romaine together with the hibiscus flower on top. Or find a fruit he/she loves like mango, raspberries or apple and then put that on top.

My beardie won't touch greens either. She's about 7 months. Have offered her every green on the produce aisle. Sticks her lil beardie nose up at em.

Tell Bindy I said, "Howdy!" Ha! Ha!

Hey niddy! How's it goin'?

I agree with "BDlvr," ya'll don't give up. I probably wouldn't offer greens every day if they're not even touching them but I'd offer them every other day or so. One of these days they'll most likely gobble 'em all up like they're going out of style.

My 10 mo. old male would only eat a little here & there up until about a week or so ago. Now that's about all he'll eat. He won't touch a cricket, now.

Funny thing is, I've got two babies that are just over 2 mos. old. I mixed some mealworms in with greens about a week ago, one picked out the mealworms & the other picked out the greens. Now they both gobble up greens like crazy.

Have a good one!

Oh, btw, niddy, WELCOME!

HappyHillbilly it is very dangerous to give young dragons mealworms. Their shells are too hard to digest causing lots of problems and perhaps death.

As for not eating greens, I had the same problem. My beardies were expecting crickets and would pass on the greens. Don't give up. They will one day start picking at them. I tired hand feeding them and eventually they picked at some things in their dish. Also puting worms in with the greens sometimes helps.

Thanks for the "heads up" on the mealworms. Honestly, I appreciate your looking out for my dragons.

I knew that heavy chitin can be hard to digest and some say that newly-molted mealworms are better. I probably should've been more clear so as not to mislead anyone but I wasn't.

My dragons are aprox. 8-inches and I didn't give them very many at a time. I also closely monitored their defecation afterwards. And the real kicker is, I probably never would've fed them any if I was able to find any small crickets at either of the 4 local petshops. They were all sold out of crickets. Arrrggghhhh!!!

So, seriously, thanks for bringing that up.

Have a good one!

Awwww dang! I just ordered a ton of mealworms! Thanks for the heads up, though. Sigh. I gotta get Bindy eating greens!

HappyHillbilly Jun 18, 2007 01:10 PM

Aawwwwe!

Since she's not eating like she should be, it might be a good idea to hold off givin' her any mealworms at all for awhile to see if it makes a difference.

I'm sorry I haven't posted in your "Won't eat" thread much, I wanted to keep my opinions from influencing anyone else's, plus, I've been super busy with my baby burms and other things.

I'll try to catch up on some things tonight.

Hang in there!

Hey HH....I just emailed this to ya, but I think I'll open it up to the kingsnake gang:

We just had a wild idea. I've got one of those juiceman juicers (ordered years ago off that guy on the tv with the eyebrows lol) It can juice anything...even greens. What if we made her a lil "greens" colada lol and dropper fed her? Think she might get a taste and eat on her own? Or think it'll just squash her instincts?

What do y'all think?

Thanks, guys,
Niddy & Bindy

I think you have to find out why she's not eating normally on her own.

Thanks for the repsonses. I can't offer up any hibiscus for a bit of time. My hibiscus bushes were infested with aphids, therefore, I had to use pesticide on them.

I gave him papaya over the weekend and it turned out to be something for the crickets to eat before they were eaten. O'well I'll keep trying.

Whoa! There's your problem. There shouldn't be any crickets in there to eat the salad.

I feed live food in the am to adults. (am & pm to juv. & Babies) What they don't eat in 1/2 hour I take out. Then I put in a salad. If I left live food in there all day I'll bet mine wouldn't eat much salad either.
